THE AUCKLAND CARTRIDGES.

(united press association.) Auckland, December 9.

Messrs Whitney and Sons, of the New Zealand Cartridge Factory, make the following explanation respecting the recent cartridge accident:—Constant use of the condemned cartridges is likely to cause our manufacture great injury. When we began a few mistakes were made, and on being found out all cartridges deli vered to Government previous to the 10th July were recalled at our request. Of these only 10,000 have been returned to be broken up, and some thousands are still in the hands of those to whom they were issued. As all our make are dated, there is no excuse for their use, and we request Volunteers not to use any cartridges except those taken from 600 cases and properly dated, the strength of which has never been called in question. Christchurch, December 9.

Mr Martin, Crown Prosecutor, states that the Auckland cartridge which burst in his rifle was one of the old issue of July. %
