THE CABLE RATES.

The following telegraphic correspondence has passed between Sir Julius Vogel and the Chairman of the Eastern Extension Cable Company : Dunedin, 30th November, 1886. Dr Lemon has settled with Superintendent the amount of guarantee on behalf of Press Association. I see no prospect of my getting guarantee from Reuter or Australian Press. The matter now stands that you charge for six months from this date (29th November) same rates as before Ist November, excepting as to Press Association, which you. charge 3d a word, on a guarantee that it will spend on cable messages, irrespective of landlines, not less than £389 Is sd, and there is to be no subsidy. It is understood that you arrange for a guarantee, if you require one, from Reuter and Australian Press.

Julius Vogel.

The Chairman, Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, London.

Sir Julius Vogel, Wellington. j Sir, —I have received your telegram of the 29th November, •which correctly states the arrangement come to. Let me add my satisfaotion at the termination of the difference, and the hope that the willingness of the Company not to let the telegraphing public suffer from the former differences between the Company and the Government weigh with the authorities in New Zealand when the whole question is reconsidered before the end of the six months. Chairman E. E. Company.

We understand that Reuter’s Company are negotiating with the Government to give a similar guarantee to that given by *~ e Press Association. The result will probably be that in a short time the amount of news sent by cable will be about doubled.
