After many abortive attempts the manufacture of really good Portland cement in this Colony seems at last to have been successfully accomplished by Messrs Wilson and Co., of "Mahurangi, near Auckland. Their cement was subjected to a severe competitive test by the Inspector of Works for the- Lyttelton Harbor Board, and stood a strain of 75 per cent more than any imported sample, breaking only at a strain of 5881bs to the square inch, while the best imported sample broke at 3891b5. In view of this result the Committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association passed a resolution congratulating Messrs Wilson and Co. upon their success, and advocating the use of this cement so far as possible in all Government works. We understand that the cement is being used by the Auckland Harbor Board in the erection of a beacon on the Rangitoto Reef, and for other works in the harbor; also- that the Auckland City Council are building two large sewers with it, and are specifying that it is to be used in all their works. In Wellington it has been used for several floors, retaining walls, and steps, and the four new brick shops on Lambton-quay erected for Mr Mulligan are plastered entirely with it. It is also now being used in the erection of the additions to the Royal Oak Hotel and other buildings in the city, and we hear it is giving great satisfaction wherever it is being used. Messrs P. Hutson and Co., of Waring Taylor-street, in this city, are the local agents for the cement.
