RE NOT AFRID-
< . Be not afraid To give expression, to a noble thought Because the -world may sneer and cry, ‘ Tis naught, And may upbraid.
Be not afraid To do the thing that conscience tells is right The way is hard, but ’tis not always night ; Thou’lt be repaid,
Be not afraid To battle, sometimes, on the losing side ; The victory of truth o’er wrong and pride Is but delayed.
Be not afraid To disapprove of what the world may prize Ol senseless laws that fashion’s votaries Has ever made.
JJe not afraid To recognise the greeting of a friend Whose poverty and poor attire offend The well arrayed.
SOME MUST WALK BEHIND.
BY AN OLD CONTRIBUTOR. The world will eveiy day improve As months and years roll by, While some will in the valleys grope, And some be climbing high ; Yet, when you join the pilgrim band. My brother, you will find, As all may not be pioneers. _ That some must walk behind.
The last one may not be the least, My neighbor, although he Who bringeth up the rear may but A water-bearer be. If be keeps step like all the rest, To progress well inclined, He will bring honor to the ranks, Though he may march behind.
He may refresh upon the way Full many a thirsty soul. And share the burdens of the day As hours and minutes roll. It is not what we do, my friend, Of all the tasks assigned, But how we do it, though we be Compelled to walk behind.
The lowly seat, the bumble place, 'Scapes not the Fathers eye, Upon all heads the rains descend— The low as well as high. Then let us do our duty well, And never be unkind, Tbou distined to bring up the rear— The man who walks behind.
