The Greytown Rifles defeated the City Guards at Greytown on Tuesday by 40 points. A Volunteer sham fight, m which the Thorndon, Te Aro, and Newtown Rifles took part, took place on Tuesday at Fort Gordon. The Thorndon and Newtown Rifles, under Adjutant Quick, took up a position behind the redoubts, and were attacked by the Te Aro Rifles, under Captain Marshall, from Worser Bay. The operations were conducted very successfully, the attacking party having the best of it. There was some active skirmishing in the scrub from the forts to the Pilot Station, and the whole squad subsequently fell in and marched to the Basin Reserve. Here Adjutant Quick, ' who was in command, addressed the men, complimenting them on the efficiency they had shown. There were a number of spectators of the manoeuvres, each Volunteer having a pass ticket for a friend. The City Rifles and Carterton Rifles met for the first time this season at Carterton on Tuesday to fire a rifle match, 10 men aside, at 200, 300, and 500 yards, five shots at each range. This is the first time onr local team have fired on the Carterton range. The light and wind were very bad for good shooting, and, as will be seen by the scores below, the scoring was not very good on either side. On leaving the 200 the Carter, ton men were leading by 7 points, but at the 300 yards the City Rifles reduced the lead by 1 point. At the 500 yards, however, they lost 17 points, thus allowing Carterton to win the match by 23 pointß. The following are the scores : Carterton Rifles. —Corporal J. Reid, 56; Sergeant R. Fairbrother, 50 ; Lieutenant Moore, 47 ; Private P. Goodin, 47 ; Corporal J. Boyes, 45 ; Private J. G. Moore, 44; Color-Sergeant Reid, 42 ; Sergeant T. Reid, 41 ; Corporal Goodin, 36 ; Private R. Fairbrother, 34. Total, 443. _ _ City Rifles. - Sergeant-Major Davis, 45 ; Sergeant Roberts, 45 ; Private Locke, 45; Sergeant Mcßean, 44 ; Private Hansen, 44 ; Sergeant Madeley, 42 ; Private Cate, 40 ; Corporal Jackson, 39 ; Private Moreluck, 39; Sergeant Burton, 36. Total, 419. The annual inspection of arms of the City Rifles took place at the Drillshed on Monday last. Present on parade, 53 of all ranks, under command of Captain Collins. Colonel Butts, assisted by Sergeant-Major Bell, inspected the arms, &c., and expressed himself pleased with them. The Guards paraded for their annual inspection at the Volunteer Drillshed on Monday. Lieutenant Coogan was in command. Forty-three presented their arms for inspection of the officer commanding the district. After the inspection was over they were exercised in company drill by Lieutenant Coogan. The Naval Artillery and D Battery paraded at the Drillshed on Wednesday for annual inspection of arms. Considering the inclemency of the weather there was a very good attendance. Staff Sergeant-Major Bell and Sergeant-Major Hyde were present, and Colonel Butts acted as inspecting officer. The shooting match between teams representing the D Battery N.Z. Artillery and the Masterton Rifles, was fired at Masterton on Monday, and was won by the visitors by 670 to 608, the highest score of the match being 82, made by Gunner , Barry. The weather was rather unfavorable, a sharp wind blowing across the range. The Wellington team were very hospitably treated by the local corps.
