London, November 3.

A settlement with, regard to the Hew Hebrides has not jet been arrived at, and negotiations are proceeding between the British and French Governments for the purpose of coming to an arrangement with regard to these islands which shall not be opposed to the previous convention, and which shall also define the mutual arrangements of the two Governments relative to the jNew Hebrides. London, November 5. Sir Graham Berry had an interview to-day with Mr Stanhope, Secretary of State for the Colonies, on the subject of the French occupation of the New Hebrides. Mr Stanhope states that the British Government had made a proposal to the French providing for the withdrawal of French troops from these islands ; but it was not expected that France would accept this proposal without some modification. The French Government had also made & proposal on the subject, but this was not acceptable to Her Majesty’s Government,

Sir Graham Berry, who has been informed that the withdrawal of French troops from the New Hebrides ia improbable, has pressed Mr Stanhope to again urge the French Government to withdraw from the New Hebrides.

France is objecting to England’s proposals relative to the settlement of the New Hebrides, and consequently Mr Stanhope is despondent of a satisfactory settlement of the question.
