WAIRARAPA AND EAST COAST PASTORAL AND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY’S SHOW.

This show was held on Wednesday under most favorable circumstances, in every way being a contrast with the last two years. Various had been the prophecies, but universal had been the hope that the show would not again be marred by inclement weather. The morning broke dull and continued so during the day, the clouds modifying the rays of the sun. As early as Monday visitors with their stock began to arrive in Carterton, and by Wednesday morning the town began to present quite a metropolitan appearance, so busy and crowded was it in all quarters. The officers and stewards, together with many of the members of the society, were most energetic in arranging stock, and classifying them to the best advantage, and in every way doing their utmost to anticipate the requirements of exhibitors and the public. The exhibits were fully as numerous as on previous years, and showed no falling off in quality. The horses were exceptionally well represented, the Wairarapa ably maintaining its reputation as a back-producing district by showing 40 which would have done credit to any show ground. The thoroughbred entries were not as numerously represented as expected, for, there being some 17 standing in the district, a greater number was anticipated than five, but these were certainly the c,ream of the district, and fully warranted? the great attention bestowed upon them by visitors, Voltigeur, Lord Mandeville, Tim Whiffler and Grand Duke each securing their share of public admiration. Nor did Dan O’Connell go without admirers, but no one was preDared for the verdict of the judges that Dan O’Connell should be classed before such horses as Voltigeur and Mandeville. How any man could compare the former with the latter two has puzzled most good judges, and thrown a stain upon what would otherwise have been very satisfactory judging. The attendance during the day was very good, about 4000 persons paying for admission to the grounds, j
