COLLEGE GYMNASTIC DISPLAY.

The annual gymnastic display by the pupils attending the Wellington College came off yesterday afternoon week at the College grounds. There were about 300 spectators, the greater portion of whom were ladies. His Excellency the Governor, with Major and Miss Jervois, witnessed the proceedings. The lads acquitted themselves exceedingly well, the time in the free and club exercises being remarkably good. After the exhibition. an adjournment was made to the College schoolroom, where Mr Mackay, Principal of the College, addressed the scholars on behalf of Miss Jervois, who, he said, had expressed great pleasure at seeing how well they had gone through their exercises. Miss Jervois then presented the prizes, as follows ; —Free exercises.—First set Masters Shannon, Laery, Cameron, and Barber; (second set) Masters Kirkcaldie, jun., Sheath, Morrah, jun., Duncan, jun. The third set—Masters Hulbert, McArthur, S. Smith, and Paterson—received 1 special mention. Four other sets competed. Club exercises.—First set— Masters Harding, Booth, Duncan, and Denton. Colbeck, Beaglehole, Whitehouse, and Stuart (second set); and Kemble, Ginders, Tully, and MoDougall (third set) also competed. Junior fours.—First set— Masters Morrah, jun., Sheath, C. Mackay, and Crawford. Two other sets competed. Senior parallel bars, ladders, and rings.— Kemble, 1; Colbeck. 2 ; Stuart, 3. Junior parallel bars, ladders, and rings.—W. Shannon, I ; E. „■ Laery, 2 ; Manthel, 3. Senior cup (for general excellence). — Kemble. Junior cup (for general excellence). Shannon. Excellence, steadiness, and attention (special prize).—Senior division— Colbeck. Excellence, jsteadiness, and attention (special prize).—Junior division— Laery. Horizontal bar.—Shannon. Prizes were awarded to Masters Kayll, Hulbert,. Caselberg, Meek, Crawford, and Skinner, as leaders of the junior fours. After the presentation Mr Mackay called for three : cheers for Miss Jervois, which were heartily given,. Mr S. Kohn, who acted as judge,, and Messrs Heine jand Evans (masters) ; and the ladies were accorded a similar compliment. At the expressed wish of Miss Jervois the scholars repeated the combined club exercise.. Refreshments were provided for the ladies.. Altogether the display was a moat successful one, and greatly enjoyed by the spectators.
