RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

A prohibition order against James Jeffries was made at the Resident Magistrate s Court last Fridsy morning. The returns of the Magistrate a Court for the past quarter show than the total number of arrests made and criminal summonses issued was 348. Saturday, before Messrs J. R. George and S. R. Dransfield, Justices, two drunkards, being first offenders, were fined 5s each, with the usual alternative in default of payment. John Findlay, who pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a tin of herrings from the shop of Mrs Pauline Meier, was sentenced to 14 days hard la *At'the Resident Magistrate’s Court on M°“dav (before Messrs G. James McNeal, alias McNally was charged with stealing a purse and £2 2s 9J in monei', the pioperty of - Mrs Helen Fraser, Dr Mahon’s housekeeper. The accused was defended by Mr E. Shaw. Evidence having been taken, McNeal elected to be dealt with summarily, and was sentenced to bix months imprisonment with hard labor. Penalties were inflicted as follows against persons charged with being the owners of wandering horses : Zachariah Nimmo, 5s and costs ; George tt. Bavlis, 2s 61 and costs; Thomas Chegwin, 5s and costs ; Wm. Timmins, 5s and costs ; Francis Sidey, 5i and costs. William ohor was fined Is without costs for having lighted a fire in the open air without the permusioa of the city authorities. -n. oa At the Resident Magistrate s Court on Tuesday morning Mary Ann White, against whom there are no fewer than 45 previous convic tions, was sentenced to seven days imprisonment for drunkenness. . . Coneiderable time was occupied in the hearing of the case of Louisa Wilson v. J. Murphy, claim £ll 2s Bd, for wages. Judgment was eventually given for defendant. Mr Hall appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Stafford for defendant. Messrs H. Halsa and J. Lachman, Justices, occupied the Bench.
