FIRES AT AUCKLAND.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, September 27.
An epidemic of fires seem to have again broken out. Yesterday morning an unoccupied house in Douglas-street, Ponsonby, belonging to Mr Benjamiu Archer, was burned down. It was an old building, and of not much value. About 11 a.m. yesterday a fire was found on the premises of Mr Eagleton, hairdresser, Queen-street, but was suppressed before a great deal of damage was done. The insurances on the premises are £4OO, and on the stock £3OO in the South British. About 3 a.m, to-day a dwelling house and boot factory, in Col-lege-road, Ponsonby, belonging to Mr Moore, were destroyed by fire. The premises being extensive, and two stories in height, caused a large body of flame, and it was feared that the residence below, occupied by Mr Moore, sen., would a‘lso go. Fortunately the firemen were able to save it, but Mr Mathew Moore’s dwelling, with the furniture, and boot factory, with stock, material, and machinery, were burned to the ground, nothing of consequence having been saved. The building was insured ft r £6O in the Imperial, and the furniture for £IOO in the same office, while the stock was insured in the London and Lancashire office for £2OO. The total loss is estimated at about £I2OO. The origin of the fire is unknown, and Mr Moore can throw no light on it. He states he was awakened out of 3leep, and found the place full of smoke and flames, and he had bard work to get out the children. A house belonging to Mr Vizard, a miner, of Coromandel, has been burned down with the furniture, stores, &c., including a quantity of gunpowder and dynamite. The fire is supposed to have originated in a wooden chimney.
