DEATH OF MR. JAMES PATERSON.

) (unite/) press association.) Dunedin, July 26. Mr James Paterson, M.L.C., died this morning. [The deceased was born in Edinburgh about the yea 3 1807. He went early in life to the West Indies, where he resided for a number of years. Having relatione in Otago, he went there about 30 years ago, and after beiug there for some time, he and the late Mr George Hepburn entered into pa*tnership as general merchants, and for some years did a considerable business in Dunedin. He represented for several years Dunedin in the House of Representatives, and was uniformly respected for bis honesty of purpose and independence of character. He was a supporter of the Stafford Ministry, which he joined in October, 1865, taking office afterwards as Postmaster-General. Mr Paterson was afterwaids called to the Legislative Council, in which be held a Beat till 1882. He has been ailing since December, 1880. He took for many years an active interest in the Presbyterian Church, aud was highly respected as a citizen and c lonisfc. He married the widow of the late Mr Bain, of Dunedin, and she survives him.
