Ho received severe wounds, his leg being broken in five places. He is not expected to ■recover, _ _ ' Christchurch, July A man natrel John Henry Wood was killed this morning in Mr Wilson Fisher’s bush, East Oxford, by a tree falling on him. He leaves a widow and nine children. Sydney ClotOD, the inebriate who escaped from the Hospital, was retaken early this morning. Mr Beelham, 8.M., ordered the gaoler to take him back to the Hospital. The Hospital Board is determined not to allow the man to be admitted again, and the affair seems likely to result in further trouble. , . , The Hospital authorities having remained firm ia their refusal to receive the inebriate who was recaptured this morning, the difficulty has been temporarily got overby sending the man to Addiugton Gaol. The affair bas caused some excitement here m consequence of there being no place suited for the reception of such cases, the Gaol, Hospital, and Lunatic Asylum all declining t> take tbe mas. Auckland, July 22. Government have authorised the Resident Railway Engineer to take on the unemployed ■on work at Mount Edea in filling up a pond there. Fowler, a railway porter, was seriously injured by falling off a truck yesterday afternoon. Dunedin, July 23. A four-roomed house belonging t> Mr Orr, of North-east Valley, has been burned down. It was insured in the Union for £l5O. The bodies of Cameron and the boy Hansen, buried by the fall of tunnel at Kawarau Gorge, were recovered. That of the man was not disfigured much, but that of the boy was fearfully crushed. The dress of Mrs McDonald, wife of a ship carpenter, caught fire while she was burning some rubbish, and not noticing it, she went outside when it blazed up, and burned her so seriously that her recovery is doubtful. Auckland, July 23. At the inquest to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the destruction by fire of Rigby’s Hotel, at Titirangi, on the 19oh ult., a verdict was returned to the effect that the fire was purely accidental, but that gross care leasness was shown by tbo barman in leaving a pan with fat on the fire unattended for quarter of an hour. Tbe house was insured for £650 in the Norwich Union. The whole of the crew of the Petrel are now discharged. The mate, Foley, remains in Auckland, Mendoza now becoming fi.st mate.

It appears that tbe documents stolen from Mr George Hall’s house with Mrs Wakefield’s jewellery were in the boxe3 found in Mr rtackett’s paddock, though a portion of tbe jewellery was missing. The boxes had not been concealed, bat were lying broken open by the side of a small creek. Tbe inebriate, whose detention has been the subject of so much controversy between the hospital and gaol authorities, was released today, two doctors having certified to his having recovered.

Auckland, July 26. Two firemen cf the Mararoa have been fined for smuggling tobacco ashore. At a meeting in the Auckland Athenreum to-night, Professor Po3nett delivered an inaugural address. Thomas Chambers has been committed for forgery. Margaret Ryan attempted suicide at St. Joseph’s Convent. Surrey Hills. She will probably recover. Ghe is a domestic servant, and has been laboring under mania. Among the through passengers by tbe Mararoa were the Hon Mr Baring, of Baring Bros., bankers, and Professor Chaney, a spiritualist. The Mararoa is to be fitted with a new propeller at Sydney, the present one being too small. She made the run seven hours under the contract time.

It is stated that a Christchurch man who went to the Kimberley diggings has transmitted to his family here as an instalment, the sum of £4OO.

There was a large attendance at the funeral of Mr John Hyde Harris which, as deceased had been Provincial Grand Master, was a Masonic one.

The Lyttelton Borough Council has decided to borrow £3OOO from the Government Insurance Department. Charles Smith, a fellmonger, for 30 years a resident of Woolston, who came to the Bay of Islands 45 years ago, died suddedly this afternoon, from apoplexy, while sorting wool in his son’s yard. George Brown has been committed for trial for having stabbed Thomas McMahon in a fracas at Brown’s boardinghouse. Dunedin, July 27. In the Compensation Court, judgment was given in the claim of Smith and Fotheringham for £5500 against the Caversham Borough Council for £2690, and costs about £IOO. Land had been taken for street-forming purposes, and it was claimed that a tramwaysiding which claimants possessed had been injured. The Council has given plaintiffs a license for a tramway-siding. The inquiry into the suspicious fire at McFadden’s boot-shop was resumed, but the evidence gave no clue as to how the second, fire originated. As five witnesses are yet to be examined, the inquiry was adjournedA somewhat peculiar point has arisen nnler the Bankruptcy Act. A bankrupt’s only assets consists of furniture, &c, valued at £2O. At 2 this morning a fire broke out in an unoccupied house iu Nelson-street, one of a closely-built block belonging to John Parker. One house was destroyed and three others gutted. Mayor Waddei’s stables were also damaged. Mr Parker’s insurance is £3OO in the South British, and Mr Waddei’s £SO in the New Zealand. The damage is far in. excess of the insurances. William Reid, of Cambridge, hss been committed for trial for alleged indecent assault on a girl aged 11. At a meeting of the late membeiß of the Auckland Benevolent Society, it was decided to resuscitate it, and commence operations to relieve distress.

Frederick Symonds, a man who has been for the last two years supported by the Benevolent Institution, was to-day committed by Mr Stratford, R.M., to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum. _ The Wairarapa Poultry and Pigeon Show was opened to-day, and is a great success.
