BIRD-POISONING.

TO THE EDITOB OP THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL Sir, —I see by the papers that the' farmers contemplate laying poison for birds, regardless of killing our beautiful pheasants and pretty Californian quail, notwithstanding the expense Government has been at in introducing and acclimatising them. If the farmers are selfish enough to do • so, .a nice crop of caterpillars and grubs they will soon have. It is well-known that sparrows are quite insectivorous during breeding time, and feed their young on caterpillars and grubs. Farmers had much better hire boys of fourteen or fifteen to tend their crops during seed time and harvest. Also to offer so much a dozen for eggs, and more for heads of sparrows. This ° laying of strychnine will lead to serious consequences if not checked by severe restrictive laws. .1 suppose these farmers are of the same lc ilk ” as those sapient ** Jeremy Diddlers ” who wished to be sent to England at Government expense to persuade the English yeomen and farmers to emigrate to New Zealand. They must be very much deteriorated if they are taken by such gammon as theirs. —I am, &c., An English Yeoman.
