FIRE IN DUNEDIN.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.} Dunedin, July 19.

Yesterday afternoon a box of rubbish in the shop of Neil McFadyeu, bootmaker, George-street, was discovered to be on fire, aad was put out by some passers-by without any damage being done. At 1 o’clock this morning the premises were again on fire. This time the fire had obtained such a hold that the premises were gutted and the stock wholly destroyed. Mr McFadyen, who was at Port Chalmers iu the afternoon, says so dense was tbe smoke that he was barely able to escape with his family. He thinks the fire was caused by the box of rubbish, but the insurance agent, who inspected the premises in the afternoon, declared that everything was safe, and was so when he inspected tbe premises in the evening. The stock was Insured for £750 in the Phoeaix office.
