The Press Association telegram from Christchurch, to the effect that Mr Penfold bad purchased Trenton, has caused a good deal of interest here, and there has been much speculation as to whom the horse has been bought for. Rumour at first, pointed to the Hon. J. White, but latterly it has been pretty generally believed that the purchaser of the horse is the Hon. W. Robinson. He is now the property of Mr Thomas Hawkins Smith, of Gordon Brook, Clarence River, that gentleman having exchanged for him hisi well known sire Captivator, also bred m England, got bv Caractacus (son of Kingston)—Miss Hawthorn, by King Tom, &c. Captivator will he shipped to the Auckland Stud Company on Thursday next. He next secured the Criterion Stakes in a canter from Oberon, Mephisto, and three others, and two days later scored a similarly easy victory in the Dewhurst Plate. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE.

The New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase Meeting, which takes place to-morrow, is attracting a large number of visitors from various parts of the Island, and a fair amount of interest is being taken in the races. Betting on the Grand National Steeplechase has somewhat livened np, and business has been transacted at the following quotations : to 10 agst Canard (tkn) 40 to 10 agst Peter Osbeck (tkn), 60 to 10 agst Michael bcott (tkn), 60 to 10 agst Secretary (off), 80 to H> agst Aroha (off), and 100 to 10 agst Victor (tkn and off). Christchurch, July 15. Mr Penfold, Secretary to the Canterbury Jockey Club, has purchased Mr Dan O’Brien a celebrated racehorse Trenton at a price exceeding that given for Nordenfeldt. Trenton aD d Erin, the trotter, were both shipped on the Wakitipu for Sydney, Mr Penfold accompanying them to Wellington. Further particulars are not known, but great kudos is given to Mr Penfold for being the plucky purchaser of the highest priced horse ever bred in New Zealand.
