THE CENSUS.
The census returns were laid before Parliament last Friday evening. The following tables show the population of each electoral district with the totals. The figures do not include Maoris. The numbsr for each district in 1881 is only given as approximately correct. The districts wt re established after the census was faked, and it was not always possible to give the population on either si lo of a newlyselected boundary-line with perfect accuracy. The numbers given are taken from returns supplied by the different enumerators, ana are subject to revision, but they may be accepted as a close approximation to the exact numbers now being made up. As the particulars for the population on shipboard and Chatham Islands have not yet been supplied, the full number of persons for the Colony cannot yet be given ; but it 13 evident so far that the population according to the census returns will be about 8000 leas than the number previously estimated. The estimates are based on actual returns of births and deaths, immierration and emigration. The deficiency is probably owing to two causes : (1) as mewhat imperfect enumeration by the subenumerators in difficult parts of the country ; and (2) the number that during the past five years have left the colony without having prepaid their passages. Notwithstanding every effort made by the Cu-toma officers to obtain correct'returns, it seems evident that a considerable number must leave annually, of whose departure no official record is kept :
The total population of the Colony in 1886 is therefore 573,480, as against 482,019 in 18S1. The number of Chinese is—North Island, 283 ; South Island 4C83 ; total, 4366.
