TO~THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL Sir,— Seeing that you have opened vour columns to a New Zealand Shipping Company shareholder, perhaps you will allow me a small space. lam not of the same opinion as “ Shareholder in the matter of coasting, as the ships are in New Zealand waters for nearly six weeks, and that if they did not carry their own passengers and freight, they would have to pay the Union Company freights and passage-money. The expenses of the ships are not much increased by the coasting, only coals, to the extent of about 40 tons per day, while transhipping some 1500 tons of cargo would cost about 10s per ton, therefore a large saving is made by freight, alone, saying nothing of the passengers. What Ido complain of is that the Kaikoura was ready for sea on Wednesday, but was delayed until Friday night, and sailed m the face of a furious south-east gale for Lyttelton, taking 25 hours for the passage and getting more knocking abeut than she did on her last homeward voyage (vide a journal kept by a nautical gentleman on board during the voyage Home), and this knocking about was caused by delaying the passage to Lyttelton to take a number of the members of the Assembly South.
