SPORTING NOTES.

[By Martini] At the sale cf yearlings at Randwick the other day, Mr Pilbrow bought a colt by The Drummer —Corrisande, for 145 gs. ; a colt by Goldsborough—Sea Breeze, for 165 gs. : and a gelding by The Drummer —Blink Bonny. These were among the best prices obtained at tbe sales. Oudeis has been sold to a Mr Clougb, who intends to use him as a station sire. Hermitage has been sold to M? James Cotton for 195 gs. £15.00 is said by an Australian Exchange to be the amount won by Mr Odenham over his mare Cerise and Blue’s victory in the Sydney Cup. Mr Oxenham by the way is the compiler of the monthly turf record, which has proved to be such a u-eful little book. The'mare has been running for him a long time now, generally seconds or thirds—enough to pay her feed bill. When Silver King romped home last season with tbe A.J.C. St. Leger (writes “Vigilant”) it took 3 min. 35 secs, to cover the distance, and beat The Broker, Tremando, and two others. This year but three horses came forth to do battle, and two were from the dangerous Kirkham stables. The champion winner, Matchlock, won a 9 he pleased, Monte Christo being second, and First Prince next, the Hon. J. White’s representatives thus finishing first and second in two important events _ “ Phaeton ” writes :—Mr Evitt got on one of the best pieces of handicapping at Papakura on Saturday last that has been seen for a long time past—Victory, Armourer, Torpedo and Clogs finishing so close together in the Railway Handicap that it was difficult to say which bad won. It is a pity, for Mr Evitt’s sake, tbat the great finish was not fought out at Ellerslie instead of Papakura ; but as it was, his hand was warmly rung with congratutions, and it is needless to say that his always pleasant face was fairly lit up with smiles.

The career of a remarkable pony is given in a letter to the Sporting and Dramatic News:— * Iu case it may be of any interest to you, I enclose a photograph of my bay country-bred pony Choirister, height 13.2, the most successful racing pony in India of recent years. Bought originally of a native in 1881, for 70 rupees, he soon proved to be almost invincible among ponies of bi 3 class, and in 1883 he was bought for 2,500 rupees, by Mr J. W. Darwood, a Rangoon merchant. Between 1883 and 1885 he baß won 10 firstclass races in Rangoon, one of his recent achievements having been to win a mile handicap with 13st. 111 b. on his back, the next poDy carrying 7st. 81b. Upon this occasion he did his mile in 2min. 6iseo. In 1834 he passed into the hands of Mr E. S. Symes, of the Bengal Civil Service, by whom he was regularly hunted last year with tbe Rangoon Beagles, proving himself to be as successful over a country as he was previously known to be on tbe flat. He has won altogether between 20 and 30 races, and now proposes to retire on his laurels.’

Writing of the race for the Autumn Stakes, “ Augur’’ says “ Nelson was not cherry ripe,” and gives the following description of ihe race ; —Mr Devlin despatched them to an excellent start. Nelson at once made play, but not at strong pace, Silver King on the outside lying next, with Prince Imperial third, Sheet Anchor on his quarter. Tempd and Sandal bringing up the rear. Much the same order was preserved past the stand, and after rounding the turn Nelson increased his lead past Cutts, and at the seven furlongs’ post he was four lengths in frout of Prince Imperial aud Malua At three furlongs from home Prince Imperial died away, and entering the straight IVlalua made an effort to get on terms with the New Zealander, and as he drew up his victory seemed certain, bnt Nelson at once responded to Brown’s call, and, drawing away again, he won cleverly, if Dot easily, by a length and a half, from Malua, with Temp 4 and Sheet Anchor, two lengths off, finishing a dead heat for third placu Silver King was fifth, Saudal sixth, and Prince Imperial last. Time, 2tnin 46Jsec. Major George’s horse Nelson returned to New Zealand by the Wakatipu, which arrived here on Sunday. The horse is looking very well, notwithstanding the large amount of travelling he has done lately. He was under the care of Cutts, his trainer, and Mr Pilbrow and Brown, the jockey, being also passengers by the boat. Mr Pilbrow brought with him a couple of yearlings he has purchased in Australia. Cutts states that Nelson put on nearly a hundred pounds during his trip across to Sydney, and that when he was stripped for a race he looked, by compaiisou with the others, like a show-horse. With regard to the Sydney Cup, Cutts is confident that if he had had the horse in Sydney four days sooner the son of King Cole would have won the race easily. An Auckland exchange says that Nordenfeidt is now safely quartered at Sylvia Paik. He is to be limited to ten mares this season, all of which will be chosen with the greatest care. .
