Co’s ship Pleione, 1092 tons, Captain Renaut, arrived off the Heads Sunday afternoon, and, notwithstanding the stiff northerly wind, managed to beat into harbor, and anchored off Kaiwarra at 9 Sunday night. She brings a large general cargo, and has made a passage of 110 days, as folio W s : Left London on September 7th, took in powder at Gravesend, and anchored in the Downs on the Bth. Weighed anchor three days later, had westerly and SW winds down the Channel, and landed the pilot off Berry Head on the 15th, clearing the Channel on the 18th. From thence to the 24th, inlat. 45 N, long. 12 W, had light SW airs, and on the latter date picked up a NE wind, which carried the ship to the NE trades, which lasted to lat. 22 N, long. 26 W, October 2nd ; from this date till October 23rd, when the Equator was crossed in long. 26’8 W, light variable winds and very hot weather were experienced. With the exception of a JS'E gale on Nov. 30, lasting 10 hours, followed by a NW gale, which continued for 24 hours, and a SE gale of 16 hours on December 13, in long 112 E, the weather and winds throughout the passage have been moderate, but very wet and cold for the time of the year. The Pleione brings lour second-cabin and four steerage passengers, who have come into port in good health. FRENCH PASS BUOY. The lightkeeper at the French Pass has re- - ported to the Marine Department that the buoy at that place has gone adrift, and that he has moored it in a bay about two miles from the Pass. SHIPPING- SUMMARY. Nothing of any great importance hashappened in the shipping trade of this port during the past month. Of course, owing to the Christmas holidays, the shipping has been a great deal more active than usual, the coastal trade at present being very brisk. The American barque Escort, 638 tons, Captain Waterhouse* which came here from New York, via Lyttelton, having discharged her cargo for this port, took in ballast, and sailed for Guam on Friday, December 4. The S.S. and A. Go’s barque Lochnagar, 464 tons, Perriam, arrived here on Saturday, December 6, from Gisbourne, to complete her loading for Home, and speedily filled up with wool, &c., sailing for London on Thursday, the 24th December, taking one passenger. The N.Z.S. Co’sR.M.S. Ruapehu, 2645 tons, arrived here from London, via Otago Heads, on Tuesday, December 8. The passage from Plymouth to Otago Heads occupied 42 days IS hours 5 minutes, the actual steaming time being 41 days 8 hours 10 minutes. She brought 209 passengers and 2890 tons of caigo for the whole of the Colony. After landing mails for here and coaling, the Ruapehu proceeded to Auckland, returning to this port on December 14th. She then discharged her Wellington cargo, and left for Lyttelton on the 19th. She leaves here for London via Rio de Janiero on January 14th. The S.S. &A. Co’s steamer Coptic, which it will be remembered was chartered by the Imperial Government with the intention of fitting her up as an armed cruiser, arrived here from London via Auckland on the same day as the Ruapehu’s arrival. She made the passage from Plymouth to Auckland in 51 days, less 6 days 3 hours’ detention, which was chiefly caused by her_ meeting with an accident to her propeller which compelled her to put in to Capetown for repairs. Her passengers for all ports amounted to 212, and her cargo to 2364 tons. The Coptic took in 6000 carcases frozen meal here, and left for Napier and Lyttelton od Sunday, December 13th, sailing from the latter port for London via Rio de Janiero on Wednesday the 23rd instant. Her frozen meat cargo from A uckland, Napier, Lyttelton, and Wellington, amounted to about 22,500 carcases. The S.S. and A. Co’s barque Langstone, 746 tons, Captain Tonkin, with a full cargo of wool, tallow, skins, &c. ; and ship Canterbury. 1245 tons, Captain McMillan, for Timaru, to load frozen meat for Home, sailed on Tuesday, December 8. On Saturday, December 12, the Eastern Extension, Australian, and China Telegraph Co’s cable steamer Sherard Osborn arrived in port from Melbourne. She came here for the purpose of repairing the Cook Strait cable, which was broken some months'■ ago. She accomplished her work on Sunday, December 20, and left for her headquarters (Singapore), via Sydney, four days later. The Sherard Osborn is a twin-screw steamer274ft long and 1429 tons gross, and was built by Messrs Scott and Co, of Greenock, in 1878. She is commanded by Captain F. Worsley, and her hands number 92 all told. During her stay here the captain and officers established themselves as great favorites by their courtesy and general bearing to visitors to the steamer. The N.Z.S. Co’s R.M.S. Rimutaka, 2885 tons, Captain'E. O. Hallett, R.N., arrived here from Lyttelton on December 12, and sailed for London on the following Thursday, with 32 passengers, 41 bags mails, and a full cargo, including about 14,000 carcases frozen meat, of which 4324 carcases, in addition to 72 quarters beef, 12 casks kidneys, and 3 bags- calves’ heads, were shipped, at Wellington. This magnificent steamer left here in first-class trim, and doubtless will make another fast run Home. The N.Z.S. Co’s, ship Otaki, 1014 tons, Captaiu Worcester, sailed for London on Saturday, December 19th, and cleared the Beads next day, taking a large cargo of wool, tallow, preserved meats, skins, &c. The next ship which the N.Z.S. Co will despatch from here for London will be the Piako, 1075 tons, Captain Sutherland, which returned from Napier, where she had been to discharge original, cargo from London, on December 23rd, and is now loading at the Railway Wharf. The first wool ship, however, to leave this port for Home will be the S.S. and A. Co’s ship Nelson, 1247 tons, Captain Bannatyne, which will probably sail on Saturday next, having nearly completed her loading. The S.S. and A. Co’s ship Pleione, 1092 tons, arrived in port on Sunday night last from London, after a rather long passage of 111 days, which is accounted for by the fact of the vessel having had more than her share of light and bafiling winds during the run out; > She brought 8 passengers and a large general cargo, which she is now discharging at the Queen’s Wharf. Mr Edward Pearce is her agent. The steamer Mohaka, which was sunk by a collision with the steamer Waihi in the Opawa River some time ago, was raised and brought over to Wellington on December 14. She is now receiving repairs on the Patent Slip, and it is believed that she will be ready to resume her ordinary running to Blenheim in about a week from the present time. Wellington will be visited shortly by Admiral Tryon in H.M.S. Nelson, which is at Auckland now. The next vessel to arrive here from London are the S-S. and A. Co.‘s steamer Tainui, via Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, which is expected to leave the latter port to-night, and will therefore be here to-morrow ; the N.Z.S. Co.’s R.M.S. Kaikoura, via Auckland, 40 days out, the S.S. and A. Co.’s steamer Doric, via Auckland, 26 days out, and the sailing vessels Hurunui, Wave Queen, and Opawa, bound for Wellington direct, 98 days, 73 days, and 44 days out respectively. From New York, the Sagetta, 110 days out, and Stella, 82 days out, ought to arrive before the publication of our next Summary. The Loch Bredan is 97 days up to the present on her passage from Liverpool to this port, and should thus be showing up at any minute.
