EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the Board of Education was held on Wednesday. Present—Mr J. R. Blair (chairman), Rev. Mr Paterson, Hon. Mr Bandall Johnson, Messrs Bunny, T. Mason, G. Beetham, W. Buchanan, M.H.R, and Dr. Newman, M.H.R. After passing the minutes and accounts, Mr 0. C. Howard’s report on test examinations of Normal Schools waa referred to the committee. , The resignation of Miss Robertson, of Courtenay-place School, was accepted, and Miss McGowan appointed in her place. Misses Taylor and Boyes were appointed pupil teachers at Tawa Flat and Ohariu respectively. The matter of increasing the salary of Miss Bright, at Newtown School, and Miss Feast, at Fernridge, was ordered to stand over, the former until after the holidays, and the latter for a month, to be left in the hands of the chairman.

The sum of £5 each was granted to Eketahuna, Makara, Judgeford, and Matarawa Schools towards the appointment of a sewing teacher. It was notified that Mr Manning had resumed his duties at the Newtown School. An application was received from Gladstone for an organ or harmonium to be fixed in the school. It was decided to leave that to the local committee to do. As it had been found that an extravagant quantity of water had been used at the Thorndon School, the chairman stated that he would take steps to have the meter tested, if not too expensive. A sehoolbell was granted to Matarawa, and £lO for repairing the teacher’s residence at Karori, but an application from the latter place to have the school painted inside was ordered to stand over. It was agreed to ask Mr Turnbull, the architect to the board, to report on the State of the Eketahuna school building, fer which a new roof had been applied for at the last meeting. An application from Mr J. Ingram for the use of a room at Newtown School for evening classes was referred to the local- committee. The Pahautanui Committee applied for permission to use a piece of land attached to the teacher’s residence. It was, however, resolved to inform them that the land belonged to the residence, and consequently to the teacher. The chairman and the Hon. Randall Johnson were appointed to make the necessary arrangements for carrying on the Terrace School during the time the school buildiDg was being repaired. It was agreed to call a public meeting for Monday, November 10, at 7 p.m., in the new schoolroom at Belvedere, for the purpose of determining the boundaries of the school district, The date of the scholarship examination was fixed for the 19fch and 20th November, to be held at Greytown for the Wairarapa, and at the training college for Wellington. The election of a member to the Board to fill the place vacant through the resignation of Mr W. Hutchison, resulted in favor of Mr G. V. Shannon, who received 26 ‘votes, the unsuccessful candidates being Messrs John Young, with 12, and James Taylor, with 6 votes. This concluded the business.
