THE FIRES IN THE SOUTH.

Temple Chambers, which were partially burnt last night, were insured for £3OOO in the National ; Rothschild and Jacobs, £7OO in the Standard ; Hooper, £2OO in the Victoria ; Matheson and Bell, £IOO in the National Office. Chapman is uninsured. The body of the fire seemed to have been in Matheson and Bell’s office, from which nothing could be saved, A good deal of damage has been done to the other rear offices. The fire was discovered by Mr Thomas Brown, who, on going into his brother’s office about 10 o’clock to write a letter, smelt fire. He went to the door at the back of the office, and on opening it he saw the fire and gave the alarm. Invercargill, October 17. Kingswell’s fellmongery, burned down last night, was insured as follows Building and plant—ln the Standard, £SOO ; Colonial, £SOO ; Fire Association, £250 ; and National, £SOO. The stock was insured for £l5O in. the Victoria, and for £250 in the New Zealand. Nothing is known as- to the origin of the fire. Blenheim, October 17. A house at Renwicktown, seven miles from Blenheim, was burned down at an early hour this morning. It belonged to Mr Dixon Cattley, who was away at the time. His" wife and family escaped through the window. The cause was a defective stove-pipe. There is no insurance.
