The following passengers had booked by the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Ruapehu, for Wellington, up to August 29 : Bishop and Mrs Hadfield, Mr and Mrs P. Donald and family, Mr and Mrs Percy Fryer and family, Mr Moore and Mr R. Gardner.

The barque W. C. Wentworth was signalled last Friday morning, and arrived in port in the afternoon. She put in here for provisions, being 21 days out from Port Stephens, a place about SO miles north of Sydney, bound to Dunedin with timber, and having shipped supplies, resumed her voyage. Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co, the local agents, have been advised that the Shaw Savill and Albion Company’s chartered steamer Florida left Rio de Janeiro on her way to London on the ISth inst. Her frozen meat was in good order. The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Hawea left Port Chalmers on Monday afternoon, called at Lyttelton, leaving there at 9.15"?pm Wednesday, and arriving here at 2.15 pm the same day. She sailed for Picton, Nelson, Taranaki and Manakau yesterday. The ss Huia arrived from Wanganui at 11.15 am Wednesday, after a run of 12 hours and returned the same night. The barque W. C. Wentworth, from Port Stephens, sailed for Dunedin at 7 am Wednesday, while the G. M. Tucker for Newcastle, and Brisbane for Lyttelton, got away at 10.30 am, and the barque Ganymede for Timaru at noon.

The New Zealand Shipping Company have been advised by cablegram, dated October 20, of the following movements of their steamers : —The ss Ruapehu left Capetown on the 19th inst for Port Chalmers, via Hobart; the ss Aorangi, hjmeward bound, arrived at Rio de Janeiro on the same day, her meat being in good condition ; and the ss lonic arrived at Plymouth, likewise on the same day, with her meat in good condition. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s barque Helen Denny, Captain James, left London on September 11, for Wellington, consigned to Messrs Levin and Co ; she was to be followed by the barque Akaroa, Captain Bowling. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s chartered steamer Coptic, how on her way out to the colony, calls at the following ports : Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Napier, and Wellington, and is to leave here for London direct on December 17. The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Wakatipu is a day later than timetable date. She arrives here from the South to-day, and sails again the same day for Sydney direct. Messrs Turnbull and Co’s barque Alexa was at Shanghai on August 28. We are in receipt of a copy of the North China Daily News from Captain G. Robb of that vessel. VOYAGE OF THE DORIC. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s chartered steamer Doric arrived off the Heads on Thursday night last week, took the pilot on board at 6.45 a.m. last Friday, and was berthed at the Queen’s Wharf at 9.30, after having been passed by the health officer. She at once commenced discharging cargo. The following is a report of her voyage : —She left the Royal Albert Dock at 5 am on August 28, and proceeded to Gravesend, embarked passengers at 3 pm, and left for Plymouth at 5 pm ; anclioied the same evening off the Nore until daylight on the 29tli, arriving at Plymouth at 5 am on the 30th ; embarked passengers and mails, also 148 nominated emigrants, and left at 10 pm for Teneriffe. She experienced fair weather across the bay, and fell in with the NE Trades on the 3rd September in 32deg N, and arrived at Teneriffe at 6 pm on the sth ; took in coal and fruits, and left for Cape Town at spm on the 6th. Lost the NE Trades on the 7th in lSdeg N. Crossed the Equator on the 12th at 3 am. Picked up the SE Trades in 2deg W, which were very strong, with heavy head seas to within a short distance of the Cape. She arrived at Cape Town at 1 pm on the 21st, making the run from Plymouth in 20 days 14 hours. Having coaled and taken in mails and stores, she left for Hobart at Ipm on the 22nd. Experienced moderate easterly gales after leaving the Cape to SOdeg E, after which favorable winds were met with as far as Hobart. The shortest distance made on one day was 23S miles on Oct. 1, and the longest 330, on Oct. 7. She arrived _ at v Hobart at 8.45 am on the 12th, thus making the run from Plymouth in 40 days 23 minutes steaming time ; coaled, took mail on board, and left again for Wellington at 6 pm, and had westerly winds and fine weather, making land at noon, and the Brothers light at 10 pm on Thursday, arriving here as above. The steaming time from Hobart was *4 days 1 hour 31 minutes, the total steaming time_44 days 1 hour 54 minutes, while the duration of the voyage was 46 days 13 hours 19 minutes. Entertainments were given during ’ the voyage by the first, second, and third cla?s passengers, and also by 'the stewards. No sickness of any serious nature occurred, the only death which happened on board was that of a prematurely born child on October 9. Mr Greenwood, a second saloon passenger for Auckland, was missing on the morning of the 2nd September, and is supposed to have committed suicide by jumping overboard. The Doric had a very large number of passengers, there having been 70 first saloon, S 3 second saloon, and 198 third cabin passengers, besides 148 nominated emigrants on board, making a total of 499, of whom 23 were landed at Hobart for that port and Melbourne. Captain J. W. Jennings is, as before, in command, the only new officer being the chief engineer, Mr J. Mclntosh. The crew number 127 hands. We are indebted to Mr IV. H. of car-o. A number of her northern passengers went on in the Te Anau Friday night, 'while the Penguin, which sailed Saturday, took up the remainder of her Auckland passengers and the cargo. The Rotorua sailed at noon on Saturday, taking the Lyttelton passengers down, while the Done herself, which sailed from here for Port Chalmers direct on luesday, took on the Otago passengers.

ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP ORARI, FROM LONDON.

The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Orari, a well-known trader to Wellington, arrived in port at 11 am on Sunday frona London, having made the passage from the Downs to Pencarrow Heads, where she arrived on 1 ruiay night, in 99 days. She brings eight saloon passengers, who have enjoyed good ‘ throughout, and a large general cargo and comes into port in her usual neat and trun con dition. She arrived off Pencarrow Heads as already stated, on the 17th, and burnt blue S-hts for the pilot, but stood off to sea agam on account of the threatening aspect of the weather. THE STELLA’S TRIP KOUND THE SOUTH ISLAND.

The Government steamer Stella returned from her periodical visit to the South Island lighthouses and the West Coast Sounds at 10 15 am on Saturday. Captain Gray reports as follows of the trip :-She left Wellington on September 25, called at Cape Campbell, Godley Head, and Lyttelton; proceeded to Akaroa township, and visited the lighthouses at Akaroa Heads, Moeraki, and Taiaroa Head to land stores, and called at Port Chalmers She left Port Chalmers on October 2, called at Cape Saunders and Nugget Point the sane day, and at Dog Island and Bluff Harbor on the 3rd. She left the Bluff on the following day, and visited the lighthouses at Centre Island ami Puv segur Point. The next place, she called at ■was Preservation Inlet, where fishing and shootexcursions were made by those on board and a number of kiwis and lcekapos yere “hot, two of the latter being captured and brought back alive. On October sth she reached Dusky Sound. Here Professor Reischeck, a German naturalist, who had been landed on the previous voyage, was picked up. He has aurin a the time he was there collected a -Urge ber of bird skins, about 200 or 300. A Air Dogherfcy and party, from Dunedin, were landed at this sound. They intend to prospect for gold, tin, copper, and other metals. The next call was made at Caswell Sound, where the Stella remained all day on the 6th, to enable Mr W. McLean,. of the Caswell Sound Marble Company, to inspect the work being carried out there by that company. The machinery recently imported from America is now in course of erection, and m a few months’ time the manager expects to have everything in working order. me steamer then proceeded to Milford Sound, at which place a grand day’s sport was obtained, a number of clucks being shot. As a curiosity, it may be mentioned that three black swans were seen there, this being the first time swans have been noticed at.that place by Captain Gray Dan Sutherland, the well-known settler at Milford Sound, was seen, and is reported to be getting on very well.. At Martin’s Bay, one of the old Otago Provincial Government settlements, shirted eighteen years agi#' stores were landed for the settlers, who bS ve now dwindled down to three families, and Mrs Robinson and her daughter (Mrs Craig), who were dangerously ill, were taken on board to be landed at Nelson. Cargo for the settlers was further landed at Jackson’s Bay, Parin-a River, and Bruce Bay. At the firstnamed place the Stella was detained for three days—on the 10th, 11th, and 12th—by a fierce SE gale and tremendous rainfall. Most of the West Coast settlements are progressing very favorably. At Paringa River a party or surveyors and a road-making gang were at work ; while at Bruce Bay about forty to fifty miners were doing well at goldwashing. The Stella had thirty tons of cargo for these places, which is considerably more than she generally takes. She left Bruce Bay on Monday, in a gale, of wind, passed Cape Farewell the following night, being unable to land on account of the heavy sea, and reached Nelson on "Wednesday morning. She left Nelson, after renewing the chain of the Bell Buoy, on Thursday for Farewell Spit, to land stores, called at the new lighthouse at French Pass, and arrived here. as above, having had a strong NW gale, with very heavy sea, acrosa the Straits.
