THE MANAWATU LIBEL CASE.

The libel case was continued to-day. The case for the defence is finished. Mr McMinn, one of the defendants, gave evidence admitting he wrote one article, alleging that Bussell had Constable Gillespie removed through malice. He denied writing the letter as to improper advances, but was prepared to take the responsibility. Latek The Supreme Court was occupied the whole day hearing the libel action. Mr Izard, for the plaintiff, called a number of witnesses, who spoke highly of plaintiff’s moral character. Mr Bussell himself made an emphatic denial of the charge relating to the assault on Louise Crawford and the Maori woman, who cannot be found, and explained the cause that led to writing about the constable. The addresses o counsel were lengthy, and the summing up of the judge occupied nearly an hour. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff, damages £ 10Considerable interest has been taken xn the case.
