Subnet, September 26. Arrived, last evening—Australia, from Auckland. The application of William and Charles Orton to have the lunatic William Cresswell, now at Parramatta Asylum, released to them, on the ground that he is their brother, Arthur Orton, has been refused by the Sydney Equity Court. Very wet weather is now being experienced here. Subnet, September 26. New Zealand wheat, per bushel, 3s ; New Zealand oats, 2s lOd; maize, 4s 9d.
Sugar Company’s No. 1 pieces, per ton, £3l. Sydney, September 26. The railway returns for this colony show a net profit at the rate of 4J per cent, upon the capital invested.
THE PACIFIC ISLANDS QUES-
TION. Medboubne, September 27. Mr Service, Premier, has tele-
graphed to Mr Murray Smith m London, instructing him to consult with the other Agents-General on the question of a protectorate over tne Pacific Islands, and to co-operate with them in joint representations to Lord Derby, and, if necessary, to Mr Gladstone', on the subject of such protectorate. It is understood that the Governments of South Australia, Queensland, and New Zealand have telegraphed similarly to the AgentsGeneral of those colonies. Further communications have passed between Mr Service and Mr Stuart, Premier of New South Wales, on the subject of the former’s proposal, but the breach between the two colonies is in nowise lessened. Adelaide, September 27. Wheat at Adelaide is quoted at 3s 7d to 3s Bd, and at out-ports, 3s 4d to 3s od. Holders are willing to operate at those prices in view of the approaching harvest. The flour market is very dull. Town brands are quoted at L 8 3.7 s 6d, and country brands, L 7 17s 6d. Sydney, September 29. Sailed, Saturday afternoon—Hauroto, for Welling too. It is now definitely announced that the Government has decided to issue the five million loan on the London market at 3-§- pov cent. The Sydney University receives a bequest of £186,000 by the death of Mrs Challis. Melboubne, September 29. Arrived, this afternoon —P. and O. steamship Cathay, with the inward Suez mails, dated London, August 22. Adelaide, September 30. The police have continued the pursuit of the blacks who attacked the party of miners at Daly Waters last month, and recently encountered a large party. In the fighting which ensued three more blacks were killed. Adelaide, September 30. Arrived, this afternoon —Orient ss Potosi, with the inward Suez mails, dated London, August 29. RETURN OF THE MAORI MISSION.
The members of the Maori mission are passengers by the Potosi for New Zealand.
