EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual meeting of the Education Board was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Present—Mr Blair (in the chair), the Rev. J. Patterson, Messrs W. K. Newman, H. Bunny, T. Mason, and W. C. Buchanan. Ibe minutes having been passed, various accounts, including the pay-sheet, which amounted to £2497 19s 2d, were passed for payment. A. letter from the Education Department was read, asking for a return of the property belonging to the Board, and giving notice that the examination of teachers would be bela a few days before Christmas, that the subsidy to the drawing and science masters had been allowed by the Government, and that they could not at present undertake the preparation of papers for the pupil teachers’ examination. The question of dealing with the uncertmcated teachers was allowed to stand over. The interim reports of the school inspector on the Wadestown, Kaiwarra, Johnson vi lle, Horokiwi, Pahautanui, Judgeford, Tawa Flat, and Wallaceville schools were then received. Five out of the seven members of the Parkvale Committee sent in their resignations to the Board. It was, however, agreed to return it, as the Board had no power to deal with the matter. Resignations received from Misses Jessie McGowan, assistant teacher at the Thorndon School ; Gertrude Stevens, Clara Pinny, Henrietta McGregor, Elizabeth Smith, pupil teachers. Leave of absence was granted to Miss Huett, Thorndon School, until the end of the year, without salary ; Messrs James Ward, Te Aro School, for one month ; L. W. Dakin, from instruction class only, until the end of the year. In the ease of Mr John K. Manning it was agreed to deduct a proportionate amount of his salary for each day of his absence.- Mr J. Berry applied to be allowed to close the Porirua School on the 26th instant, and Mr Charles C. Howard for an extra week’s vacation for the Training College. The applications were granted. Miss Braithwaite was appointed sewing teacher at Waihakeke, and Mrs Boyes at Ohariu. .It was agreed to retain the services of jVliss Emma Davies at the Thorndon Infant School at a small increase in her salary. Mr Thomas Mackay, a resident of Whareama, applied for a grant in aid of the education of his children, on° account of his distance from any school. The matter was left to the chairman.. Mr John Larkin wrote to the board, complaining of alleged severe punishment administered to his son by William Price. The affair was referred to the committee to report on. With re- 1 gard to the school buildings to be erected at Pahiatua and Dalefield, the committee decided fco call for improved plans and tenders. An application was received from the Ekatahuna School Committee for an amount towards repairing the roof of the schoolhouse at that place which had been damaged by the recent heavy rain 3. Mr Bunny wa3 appointed to report on the matter. The Carterton Committee applied to have the cost of some repairs to the teacher’s residence refunded. On the motion of Mr Bunny, it was resolved to communicate with the applicants, to the, effect that a similar request had been refused to the Featherston Committee, and that the local committees were obliged by their regulations to carry out petty repairs. With regard to the additions to the school at Masterton, the boaid agreed to inform the committee that there were not sufficient funds at present. The Chairman, referring to the application, remarked that the Board had aided the school committees to the extent of 50 per cent, over and above the amount the Government had allowed the board for that purpose. An application from the same committee, for a grant in aid of the Masterton Public Library, was also refused. The question of procuring apparatus for science teachers was referred to the committee. The following provisional appointments of probationers, as recommended by a special committee of the board, were made Miss Jane Wallace, to be transferred from Mount Cook Girls’ School to the boys’ school, vice Miss Toomath resigned ; Mr Lawrence Porter, Te Aro School ; Mr Alexander Mcßean, Ghuznee-street School ; Miss Annie Tonks to be transferred from Petone to Ghuznee-street School; Miss .Priscilla Hudson, Courtenay-place School ; Miss Mary Seamer, Tory-street School. All these appointments to be provisional, pending a report from the respective teachers, and, as far as practicable, from the inspector at the end of three months. One month’s additional leave of absence was granted to Mr Lawrence Johnstone, of Maurice ville. Thia concluded the business.
