EDUCATION BOARD.

jAn extraordinary general' meeting of tho Education Board was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Present—Mr J. R. Blair (Chairman), Hon. J. R. Johnson, Dr. Newman, and Mr T. Mason. The Board proceeded to examine the various returns which had been sent in for the election of a member in the room of Mr C. Pharazyn, resigned. The following was the resuit :—Mr W. C. Buchanan, 16 ; Ven. Archdeacon Stock, 12 ; Mr C. Phillips, 6 ; Mr E. Darby, 3. Out of the 43 Committees in the district, 38 bad voted, one vote being, however, informal. The Chairman declared Mr W. C. Buchanan to , have been duly elected. : , Messrs Mauasell and Strawbridge, representing the Waihekvke School Committee, waited on the Board, and urged that Mr Austin might be appointed teacher in place of Mias Morisson, who had'been selected by the Board. After a lengthy discussion,‘.it was resolved to accede to the request, Dr. Newman alone dissenting. Leave -of absence for four rriqnths was. granted to Mr A. Lecoy, French master at the Normal School. Mr Lecoy stated that urgent family affairs in France demanded his presence there. Mr Mason explained that owing to the holidays the. Committee which bad been appointed to examine and report upon the Newtown school-ground had not been able to meet. He thought, however, that they might be able to pay a visit that afternoon. (The visit was subsequently arranged and carried out in accordance with Mr Mason’s suggestion.) Mr Mason also explained the nature of the improvefnents which had been applied for by the Ohariu Committee at the last ordinary meeting of the Board. These consisted of the erection of a division between the boys’ and girls’ playgrounds, the levelling of the same, and the erection of a shed for the use of the girls.' The cost was estimated at £ls. It was 'resolved to graut the amount. The Petone Committee reported the purchase from:Mr W. Buick of a section in Jack-‘son-stieet, containing one acre, for the sum :of £l6O. The Secretary mentioned that Mr Wilson, of the Te Aro School, had resigned his appointment, and that he would advertise the vacancy. ■ The Committee, which had been appointed for the purpose, brought up a draught of the annual report, which was approved of. Excepting that it contains a recommendation jthat the compulsory clauses should be brought iinto full operation by all School Committees, ;the document contains nothing of importance which ia not treated in the Inspector’s report, .which was net presented at the meeting, but -which is noticed elsewhere.
