SPORTING NOTES.

I remind all'who are interested in the Wanganui Racing Club Summer Meeting, that Monday next, the 16th inst, is general entry night. Entries for Maiden Plato and nominations for the Handicap Hurdle Race (first day), Flying Stakes Handicap, Railway Stakes Handicap, Hutt Park Stakes Handicap, Hurdle Handicap (second day),, and Racing Club Handicap must be made on that day. A payment of 8 sovs, is also due, on the Wellington Cup. The weights for the Flying Stakes and first day’s Hurdle Race will be declared on the 30th inst, the acceptances being due the following day. - - Rather a short notice I think, especially when there is no apparent reason why a week or a fortnight should not have been allowed, • i

The close finish in the Auckland Cup, 2£ miles, indicates that the winner, King Quail, does not stand much of a show for the Wellington Cud. the distance for which is 2 miles. He carried 7st 41b tip North, and is handicapped for the local event at 21b less ; hut as he has incurred a penalty of 71b, he will start here with 7»t 91b. Hilda, who run a good second, carries a pound more here than she did at Auckland, and the two would, therefore, meet at a comparative difference of 41b—enough to turn the tables, unless King Quail has more in him than I give him credit for. Judging by his Auckland running he is clean out of it. He won the Auckland Racing Club Handicap by a bare nose, but was unplaced in the Cup, for which, however, he carried 71b over weight. By the former he has also incurred a penalty. Besides, the trio will have better company to meet than any they met with in Auckland. I am also afraid that the Yattendon —Peeress Colt, who, I think, was as well in as any animal in the list, will have no show, even if he starts, for his legs, appear to be giving him a lot of trouble. It is, of course, useless to discuss the chances of the whole list at present, as a number are sure to drop out; the Stewards, however, have every reason to expect that there will be a large field. : ? :u ■■■■■• The next meeting "on the boards is the Anniversary Meeting of the Carterton— Taratahi Club. None but local horses are likely to compete. The Waikato Turf Club ha 3 issued a good programme for its summer meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Friday, February 16 and 17. About £4OO in added money is distributed as follows: —First day : Hurdle Race, of 30 sovs; Maiden Race, of 30 sovs; Turf Club Handicap, of 100 sovs ; President’s Stakes, of 35 sovs; Hack Race, of 15 sovs. Second day: Hurdle Race, of 30 sova : Publicans’Purse, of 75 sovs; Maiden Steeplechase, of 25 sovs; Flying Stakes, of 25 sovs; Consolation Handicap, of 25 sovs. Tlie Hon J. P. Bell’s mare, Wheatsheaf, the dam of Wheatear, and undoubtedly one of the most valuable brood mares in the Australian colonies, broke her thigh recently, and has since been shot. Mr Bell recently refused an offer of 3000 guineas for her.

The new Egmont Racing Club has, it appears, been formed at Hawera. A gentleman v/howas present at the meeting supplies the following to “ Spectator Major Atkinson was elected President; Mr Jas. Livingstone, Vice President; Mr Charles Ranson, Secretary ; Mi' Hately, Bandicappei’; Mr J. Burke, Starter; Mr F. R. Jackson, Judge; Mr Henry Davis, Clerk of the Course ; Messrs Martyn, ; Mcßae (Manaia), Brett and Croker (Normanby), Nolan and Moreeroft (Hawera); Peacock (Manutahi), Stewards ; and the above gentlemen and Messrs D. Hughs, H. Owen, S. Adamson, Bute, and others, whose names I did not hear, Committee of Management. Mr McLean, near Waingongoro, had kindly arranged to let the Club have the use of one of his paddocks for this season, and it was decided to hold a meeting during the last week in March, the object being to catch horses on their way to Taranaki meeting. The prizes were arranged as follows :—Hurdles, 30 soys ; Maiden, 30 sovs ; District Race, 40 sovs ; Hawera Jockey Club Handicap, 100 sovs ; Consolation, 20 sovs. A subscription list was started, and 40 signed their names as willing to become members' of the Club.' _ ■' so .... ; The number of meetings which are to be held within a short space of time is certainly startling. As “ Spectator ” observes, with the Turakina meeting on the 4th March, Wanganui on the 10th and 11th, Waverley on the 17th, Hawera ' about the 25th, and New Plymouth on March 31st and April Ist, the sporting public on the coast between Turakina and New Plymouth will have their tastes gratified. The same spirit in sporting matters appears to have prevailed between Otaki and New Plymouth since the information of the Wanganui Jockey Club, some seven years ago, and the people in those districts can certainly claim to being the racing community in the colony j ar excellence. A mysterious paragraph has found a place in the notes of “ Spectator.” It reads as follows :—“The two Kings of the New Zealand. The Auckland Cup and Steeplechase winners,” I can only imagine that my friend

is under the impression that he has perpetrated a joke, by playing upon the name of the two horses concerned. It is, however, a pity he did not follow the style of Artemus Ward in that author’s earlier productions by attaching an explanatory label. .. ." The annual meeting of the AVanganui Trotting Club , took place last week. The balance -sheet showed that ..there was £56 18s 5d in hand. A number of new members were elected. I take the following paragraph from the “ Chronicle.” :—A" .committee of 13,members .was elected,, consisting of Messrs F. ,M. ..Betts,. Richards, Q. 11. Chavariries, F. It. Huff, T.
