CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

The new law courts are being rapidly proceeded with. The brickwork of the second court and the wings of the main building h .is been finished, and the roofs are on, while the walls of the main court are now rising above the other portions. The whole of the brickwork is expected to be finished in four or five weeks' time, and the work will then be ready for the plasterers. Preparations are now being made for driving the foundation piles for the new Volunteer drill-shed in Maginnity*-street, Thorndon reclamation, a pile driver having been carted to the spot yesterday. Mr. S. Brown, the contractor, expects to have the work in progress this week.

The work of constructing the storm-water drains in Bunny-street is well advanced, the pipes having been laid and jointed for half the required distance. A similar work will be commenced in Whitmore-street shorty.

The permanent way on the new railway wharf is almost completed, the line having also been laid for some distance along the reclaimed land towards the railway station. There are three separate lines on the wharf, one on each side and the third in the centre, and the work appears to have been very efficiently performed by Mr. Lockie, the contractor. A few more days will see it all completed.
