KARORI-MAKARA HIGHWAY BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday at the Board's office, Karori. Present : Messrs. C. C. Graham (chairman), P. Monaghan, J. McLeavy, O. Hendry, H. Cook, J. S. Prendeville (clerk), T. Robinson (collector). |g>The corresp 'ndence was read. Mr. Monaghan moved, —That Messrs Graham. Hendry, and him«elf, be a deputation to wait on the Minister of Crown Lands, with a view of affording facilities for pushing on the Karori diversion.

Mr. Hendry seconded, and it was carried. Mr. Monaghan proposed, and Mr. Hendry seconded, —That the Bank account be transferred from the Bank of New Zealand to the Colonial Bank, as he believed they would deal more liberally with the Board in every shape and form. Besides, he considered the latter bank as a colonial institution should receive their support. On being put to a division the motion was declared lost, there being for —Me.-srs. Monaghan and Hendry ; against—Messrs. Cook, McLeavy, and the Chairman. It was decided that the rangers be instructed to take summary proceedings against the owners of all horses, cattle, &c, found straying on the roads, as it was now becoming an intolerable nuisance, and that the clerk be directed to post up notices along the different roads, warning people :against letting their horses and cattle stray on the roads. It was decided to put up a grating to protect the recently erected culvert and works near the Botanical Garden gate.

A deputation of Mitchelltown settlers attended to request the Board to urge upon the County Council the desirability of completing the roadway between Aro-street and the Mitchelltown road.

The clerk was directed to remonstrate with the County Council on the subject. Mr. Monaghan suggested that some arrangements might be made.by which the office of Registrar of Dogs for the Karori riding of the Hutt County Council might be combined with that of rate collector.

It was resolved that the clerk be authorised to call for tenders for the combined offices.

Mr. Hendry proposed, and Mr. Monag an seconded, —That an approximate return be prepared by the clerk stating the total amount of rates received during the last three years, specifying the amount raised in each ward, also the amount spent in each ward and on each particular road in the various wards ; also the estimated amount for next year similar to the foregoing as far as possible ; and that these returns be sent to the morning and evening papers, so that the ratepayers may known the state and destination of the rates for the past and current years. Carried. It was agreed to send roadmen to repair the bridge near Mr. Hooper's, on the South Karori road, and that he be authorised to employ any labor required. Mr. McLeavy was authorised to have the side drains in South Makaia road cleared out, and a side cutting made near Mr. Bowler's, at a cost not exceeding £ls. The clerk was directed to give notice to parties allowing the furze to overhang and block the road notice, that unless the same be removed within a month, proceedings will be taken against them. Mr. [Cook moved, and Mr. McLeavy

seconded, —That the clerk be authorised to write to the Chief Surveyor pointing out that notwithstanding the many promises made to have the survey of the Makara district pushed through, nothing had been jet done in the matter. Carried.

Sundry accounts were then ordered to be paid, and the adjourned.
