Hawera, March 10.
The Royal Commission left Waitara yesterday for New Plymouth, where they sit for a day or two, returning here at the end of this week or beginning of the next. It is said that Sir T>. Bell intends visiting Parihaka, but not officially- Large quantities of food have been, and still are beiog, sent there for the meeting on the 17th, which is expected to be a large one. The natives appear to be waveiing in opinion as to what is to be the upshot of affairs, the staunch Te Whitiites believing he will yet make all things right for them, whilst many begin to feel doubtful. There are no signs of resistance of any kind, but rather of subjection. Honi Pihama will not go to Parihaka, but nearly all his people will. Titokowaru, I hear, intends going, and he has sent six cart loads of provisions. I shall visit Parihaka in a day or two.
(from a correspondent.) New Plymouth, March 10.
The Royal Commission sat in the Native Office here to-day, and went carefully into the history of the reserves. Mr. Parris was examined at length, and all the chief Crown lands and native officials were present. The Commissioners are sifting the subject of enquiry to the bottom, and whatever their conclusions, they will be based upon the best practicable evidence obtainable. Scores of natives are passing through NewPlymouth toward the annual meeting at Parihaka on the 17th inst. Ifc is considered this will be the largest and most important meeting Te Whifci has ever held.
