A cricket match was played on Saturday, in Mrs. Leech's paddock, between the Oxford and Surrey Cricket Clubs, and ended, after a close contest, in a victory for the Oxford players by 1 run, on the first innings. The highest scorers for the Oxfords were Prideaux and Beck, who contributed 20 and 9 respectively. The top scorers for the Surrey were Burton, 11, and Emeny, 7. Remington and Richardson bowled well for their respective sides, Remington taking three wickets in one over.

The return match between the United C.C. and the Rising Star C.C. was played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, resulting after a close contest in a victory for the Rising Stars by five runs. Owing to the bad state of the ground the scoring was very small. The return match between the Thorndon and Te Aro brewers and publicans was played on the Basin Reserve on March 4. Play commenced about half-past eleven. The Te Avo captain, Mr. H. Mace, having won the toss, decided on sending the Thorndon men to the wicket?, and Mr. W. Staples, the Thorndon captain, sent to the wickets Messrs. J. Staples and Fordham, the former being disposed of without scoring, but Mr. Fordham managed by good playto put together 34. On returning to the pavilion he was loudly cheered. The only other player who managed to get double figures was Burbush, with 10 to his credit. After a short interval the Te Aro men handled the willow, Messrs. Mace and Wakeford being the first to do battle for their side. Mr. Mace at once opened the "ball" by some fine hitting, but he soon lost his partner, Fordham proving too much for him. There was nothing particularly noteworthy in this innings except the batting of Mr. Mace, who has not forgotten his old form, and when the last wicket fell he had the fine score of 45 to his credit, not out. At the conclusion of the innings he was hoisted as high as four strong men could manage to lift him, and carried to the pavilion amidst great cheers. Shortly after the Thorndon men again handled the willow, and before the last wicket fell they had put together 43, the only double figures being Fordham 13, and Burbush 13, not out. The bowling of Messrs. Mace and Block in the second innings was very destructive, the latter taking three wickets in three consecutive balls, thus winning a new hat. Te Aro had to get 40 poin',s, which they obtained with the loss of four wickets, Mace putting together 22 in fine style. The batting and fielding on the whole was very fair. At 2 o'clock the teams adjourned for lunch, provided by Hostess Hall, of the Caledonian Hotel, to which the teams did ample justice. Mr. Mace proposed the Thorndon team, coupled with the name of Mr. J. Staples, to which he responded in suitable terms. Mr. Maginnity then proposed the Hostess, and Mr. Hall, in the absence of the landlady, responded. Mr. Wallace, for Thorndon, and Mr. Worth, for Te Aro, acted as the umpires, and Mr. Maginnity the scorer. Probably the conquering game will be played before" the season is over.
