VITAL STATISTICS.

Return of the Number of Births, with tho actual Mortality, and the Proportion of Deaths to Population, in the under-men-tioned Boroughs, duriug the Mouth of May, 1879.

Population. —ln the cases marked thus * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census thou taken ; in t.he other cases the numbers have been estimated for t,lu; Ist January, 1879. Thu total births in the above boroughs amounted to -1 15, against 107 in April--an increase of 38. The deaths anion it.ed to 170 in May—a decrease of 19 ou the number in April. Of the above deaths, males contributed 99 ; females, 71. 69 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 40-59 per cent, of the whole number ; 40 of these were of children under one year of age. The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs :—The births were 235 in May, against 269 iu April, a decrease of 34. The deaths in May were 109, against 12S in April, a decrease of 19. There were 5 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards—viz, 2 males of 65 and 88 in Auckland ; 1 male of 67 and 1 female of 80 in Wellington ; and 1 female of 76 in Christchurch. Zymotic diseases caused 28 deaths in May, against 51 in April. The greatest decrease occurred iu Wellington, the deaths from dysentery and diarrhoea in that borough having fallen from 17 in April to 4 in May. In Dunedin there were not any deaths from diarrluea iu May ; there were 5 iu May.
