CREDITORS’ MEETINGS.

An adjourned meeting of the creditors of Mr. J. Adams, builder, was held at the Supreme Court on Monday, Mr. Tringham in the chair. A number of proofs of debt were put in, and Mr. Alcorn read a report from the committee appointed at the previous meeting to investigate the affairs of the debtor. From this report it appeared that the assets amounted to £2351, and liabilities £8666 12s. lid., £5344 7s. sd. of this sum being unsecured. It was expected that the estate would realise about ss. iu the pound to the unsecured creditors. Messrs. Mills, Hutchins, and Alcorn were appointed trustees, aud the deed of arrangement was assented to. It was resolved that the debtor be allowed to retain £l5O worth of furniture, and that the trustees be remunerated at the rate of five per cent. The trustees were also empowered to reimburse out of the estate the expenses incurred by the investigating committee for clerical assistance.

In the estate of Henry Best, accountant, a meeting was held yesterday afternoon, presided over by Mr. J. E. Nathan. The statement showed liabilities, £665 15s. 4d., and assets £270, the latter including furniture valued at £2OO in excess of a lien upon it, book debts, &c. Mr. S. Carroll was appointed trustee, and •the meeting was adjourned after the debtor had been examined at some length. A stormy meeting of creditors to the estate of George Sayer, storekeeper, of Carterton, was held, presided over by Mr. Capper. An offer was made of a deed of arrangement, but after some consideration an adjournment was made to enable a further investigation of the affairs of the debtor to be made.

A meeting of creditors in the estate of Mr. McKirdy, contractor, was held, Mr. L. Levy presiding. A deed of assignment was assented to, and the meeting was adjourned for a week to consider an offer made for the purchase of the estate.

At a meeting held in the estate of T. H. Smith, dealer, a composition of Is. in the £ was assented to.

Meetings were to have been held in the estates of W. Philip, and John Breen, but they lapsed for want of quorums. An adjourned meeting of creditors of Mr. Wm. Philp, contractor, Wellington, was held at the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Mr. Gill was appointed trustee, aud the debtor was examined as to bis contract with the Corporation, after which the meeting was adjourned for a week to enable the debtor to furnish a statement of accounts connected with the contract.

A meeting of creditors of Messrs. Henry Richard Jury and Walter Henry Jury, blacksmiths and engineers, Wellington, was called for Tuesday, but lapsed for want of a quorum, the meeting standing adjourned until to-day. Liabilities are set down at £65, and assets at £l2O.

The creditors of Mr. Corpe, mill-sawyer, Taratahi, West Wairarapa, also met on Tuesday, Mr. W. Booth presiding. The debtor’s statement showed liabilities £9595 3s. Id., and assets £13,600 Bs. Bd.. the latter including saw-mill and plant, with 100 acres of land on which it stands, 420 acres of totara bush, 20,000 ft. sawn timber, houses, land, &c. The debtor ascribed his failure to several causes, amongst which was the Bank calling in his overdraft, the timber not selling, and bad debts. He %vas of opinion that in twelve months time he would be able to pay 20s. in the £. Messrs. H. W. Mills and E. H. Crease were appointed trustees, and a deed of arrangement was unanimously assented to, much sympathy being expressed for the debtor. A resolution was carried to the effect that the trustees should not realise on the estate for twelve months. A meeting of creditors of Mr. H. Powell, painter, Wellington, lapsed for want of a quorum.
