RESIGNATION OF SIR WILLIAM FITZHERBERT FOR THE HUTT.
ACCEPTANCE OT THE PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL. Sir William Fitzherbert has definitely decided upon accepting the Presideucy of the legislative Council, which position had been offered to him by the Government. In his retiring address to the electors of the Hutt, he concludes thus :—" In many fierce political struggles I have fearlessly advocated in your midst liberal and advanced views of policy, and I shall cherish, as long as I live, a grateful memory of the generous support you always gave me." There is likely to be a keen contest for the seat vacated by Sir William. Messrs. Mason, Jackson, and Hutchison ore spoken of as likely candidates ; whilst efforts are being made by the Government to induce Dr. Buller to stand for the electorate.
