Commercial News.

The amount of Customs duties collected at this port for the week ending April 24 were as follows :

Wo report a continued dull state of trade in tho import market. With the exception of some few of the leading articles, it is almost needless to attempt to give quotations, so little business having been done, aud-that of an entirely retail character. Hennessy's case brandy remains at 33s Gd to 345, with a fairly active demand; bulk do, 9s Oil to 9s 9d per gallon ; other brands be ng comparatively neglected. Sugars are unaltered, anil are quoted £4l 10s to £42 for No. 2 white, and £4l to £42 per ton, duty paid, for lirst counter. Tobaccos are easier, there being heavy stocks, but holders keep up prices, as the demand is limited to the current retail supply. In colonial produce, butter in kegs has improved in value owing to the dryness of the season and the comparatively short supply, but as the demand is now entirely local it is not probable that values will go much higher. We quote present rate for prime sample at 12d per lb. Bacon and hams have been rather low in stock, and worth 9d to 9jd per lb ; the new euro coming forward will probably come in at a lower rate. Cheese dull, atßil to BJd, with light stocks in dealers’ hands.

Flour.—Best brands lof Oamaru and Canterbury (lour remain nominally at £9 to £9 10s per ton ; but in the present state of the market it is difiicult to give ft quotation, as first quality samples of flour have been unavailinglv offered at much lower rates.

Grain. —Oats are in full supply at 3s to 3s 3d per bushel, anil as stocks on hand in the South arc excessive, prices are not likely to be higher this season. Wheat for fowls is in moderate enquiry at 3s Gd to 3s 9d, maize dull, at 5s to 5s 3d; pollard, £5 10s per ton; malting barley, none. l’otatoes.—Fair demand, at £5 to £5 10.3 per ton. Timber.—Several auction sale 3 b&ve taken place lately for largo quantities of kauri arfft red pine boards anil scantlings, anil exceedingly low pric s have been accepted under the hammer, hut holders still endeavor to keep up recent current rates of 10s Od to lls Gd per 100 ft for red pine. BY TELEGRAPH. (per press agency.) CHRISTCHUKCH, Thursday. The Press reports considerable business in the grain and produce market during the week. Wheat is in active demand, and late prices are maintained for really prime. For milling ami seed samples 3s 5d to 3s (Id have been respectively obtained ; good average quality wheat commands 3s 4d. Oats continue depressed, very few sales being effected during the week; as farmers prefer holding to accepting rales offered ; buyers offer 2s Oil for feed, and 2s 7d for milling, but farmers generally expect at least 2d per bushel more. Barley continues in good demand, although not so much eagerness is shown by buyers s some little time ago; plime samples are r adily saleable at os 0(1, and other qualities at rates corresponding with quality. In Hour very fair business is reported by the millers ; quotations are unaltered at £8 to £9 ss, according to the brand. Bran and sharps in less request, and quoted at £4 to £4 10s respectively. Gross seed •still hangs heavily, and no improvement. otatoes are selling at 50s. Butter is olfering more freely ; some sales are reported at 9d. Cheese is in moderate demand, at 7lil. Hams and bacon are out of stock, nominally Bd. In the import market, since tbe resumption of business after Easter we have little or. no change to report. A moderate amount of trade can he noted, but not much of a special character. The strain at present felt in the money market is so severe that purchases made are never beyond actual requirements, anil buyers hesitate before accepting line-, even at tempting prices. AUC'KL \ND, Thursday. Alessrs. Binney and Alasoii report ; Business Is confined to trade parcels, and quotations show no material

§j| We report no transactions in shares during the past week worth calling attention to. Several sales have come under notice at a much lower rate than quoted, hut they are exceptional, and due to money pressure. There are buyers of bank and insurance shares, but holders are not yet forced to accept lower quotations.
