Chess.

We understand that the Christchurch Chess Club contemplate offering a valuable “ champion chess prize,” which will be open to competition to the whole of the players in New Zealand. This club, in its well-known zeal in chess matters, is anxious to find out who is really the best player in the colony, and to that end the prize above mentioned is offered. What form the prize will take, whether it vvill .be in the shape of plate or money, we are. not at present in a position to state ; but vve trust sincerely that all the chess clubs and player's in New Zealand will join heartily in the scheme proposed by our sister club, and do all in their power to make the same a thorough success. PROBLEM 34. . By John Bryce, Esq., M.H.R. Black.

(b) This Variation is. I believe, not given in She Books. (c) I do not consider this perfectly satisfactory outcome of’ the opening advantage. The tendency of Zukertort to simplification is rather a flaw in his play—(d) And, of course, all the rest is like unto Noughts and Crosses.
