Commercial News.

The Customs duties received at this port for the week ending July 20 were as follows :

The import trade has been exceedinlgy quiet during the week, transactions being apparently strictly limited to current wants. Stocks are increasing and prospects of improved rates more and more distant. Kerosene is in demand, the stock in store being more than usually low. II olders are asking 2s. 6d. per gallon. Salt.—No fine in the market ; worth £6 per ton. There are ample stocks of sugars and spirits, the former being quoted at a trifle over cost. Brandies remain at former rates. In colonial produce keg butter continues low in stock, and wanted for home consumption. Holders ask is. 2d. to Is. 3d. per lb. for prime cure. Cheese. —Moderate stocks of Canterbury make at lOd. Hams and bacon are in full supply, the new cure being worth 12d. to lOd. per lb ; if packed in cloth 12*d. to 10gd. per lb. Flour remains comparatively stationary, in spite of the millers’ advance, and we cannot quote higher than £ll 10s. per ton for Canteibury, and £l2 for Oamaru mills, in trade lots. Maize very scarce and worth ss. 3d. to ss. sd. per bushel, llie stocks of oats continue large, and prices are consequently without signs of improvement. Good leeding sorts are worth 2s. 3d. to 2s. 6d. per bushel Good samples of milling wheat are readily taken at ss. 2d. at ss. 3d. per bushel.- Chicken wheat in fair enquiry to 4s. to 4s. 3d. per bushel.

Coal and Fiuewood Market. Coal. —Newcastle, £2 ss. per ton. Firewood. —2 foot rata, 365. to 40s per cord ; 1 foot wood, 455. per cord ; 4 foot wood, 365. xier cord; 0 foot wood, 365. per cord. Building Materials. Timber, —Boards and Scantling, 100 ft., 9s. to 155.; 11s. 6d. at mill; planed, tonguedand grooved, 11s. 6d. to 12s. sd. Red pine palings, 12s. per 100 ; red pine timber, 16s. per 100 feet ; kauri timber, ISs. per 100 feet ; red pine, tongue groved, 225. per 100 feet; totara posts, Is. 4d. each ; birch rails, Bd. each ; white pine shingles, 16s. to 18s. per 1000. BONE DUST. Bone dust, No. 1, £8 to £lO ; hone dust, No. 2, A 7 10s. to £3 10s.; hone dust, No. 3, £6 to £6 10s. CHRISTCHURCH. (From Saturday’s Lyttelton Times.) Grain and Produce. —No first hand transactions of any note have come under our observation during the week. We quote wheat firm at 4s. to 4s. 3d., according to quality, but there is little or none offering. Oats remain at Is. Bd. to Is 9d. for good short heavy quality; tartarian are dull at Is. 6d. to Is. 7d., and stocks are heavy. Barley continues in fair inquiry at up to 4s. for best samples, whilst inferior and second quality parcels are neglected. Cheese is offering freely at Bgd., but merchants are not anxious purchasers, and only best samples command this figure. Butter is also coming to hand in larger quantities, but meets with less support at the hands of merchants: we quote Is. to Is. Id. as buyer’s rates at Christchurch. Potatoes are offering freely, but merchants seem disinclined to operate, except at a concession on late rates. We quote 355. to 375. 6d. as buyers’ quotations for delivery at Christchurch, but farmers appear very unwilling to sell under 40s. Hams and bacon are in moderate request at 9d. to 9,}d. f.o.b. Flour, bran, and sharps are unchanged, and a fair export demand exists for these articles at ld*i>6 rates Stock and Stations. —At the Addington saleyards on Wednesday 3219 sheep were yarded, which comprised some of excellent quality, turnip fed, threequarter bred Leicesters, for which class as high as 20s. 6d. was obtained, making a quotation of close upon 2d. per lb. The supply of fat merinos was very poor, 7s. 6d. topping the market for this description. On© or two lots of broken mouth merino ewes, in lamb to long-wool rams, sold at from 2s. 6d. to 4s. 6d. per head. 217 head of cattle were yarded, which consisted of some very fair beef. For best quality we cannot quote higher than 275. 6d. per lOOlbs. TIMARU. Grain and produce report for the week ending Friday.—Business has been exceedingly quiet during the week, and very few transactions have taken place. We have to quote—Wheat, good quality, 3s. 10s. to 45.; barley, inferior and dull of sale, at 2s._ to 35., good samples being very scarce ; oats, of which there isagoodsupply, rangefromls. 6d. to Is. 9d.; potatoes, £2 10s.; flour, £lO 10s. The above prices are quoted f.o.b. SYDNEY. Monthly produce report for New Zealand, specially prepared for New Zealand markets by the N.Z.L. and 3M Agency:— Wheat. —The market has somewhat hardened, especially for Adelaide, which is worth ss. sd. to ss. 6d., and New Zealand is now quoted at ss. The future course of prices will depend upon English advices, the interruption to the cable being severely felt. Oats are oversupplied, and to effect sales 2s. 3a. would have to be accepted. The sowing season has passed and demand for Tartarian is only speculative. Barley.—There is no demand in this market, and price in Melbourne would leave a large loss on transhipments to that market. Recent importations here remain in store. , .... Bran.— The market is quiet, and retailers are selling at reduced rates in hopes of inducing importers to accept lower prices. The present value is 16d. per 201b5., bags included. Chaff —All that has yet come forward from New Zealand is of inferior quality, apparently damaged in the field, and the mode of pressing still further injures the sale. Prices realised have been from £ll 10s. to £5 10s. per ton. BY IELEGRAPR. DUNEDIN, Thursday. Mi'.
