Commercial News.

The Customs duties received at this port for the week ending July 13 were as under :

The import trade during the past week has been only moderate and restricted to ordinary requirements, no sales to any extent having come under notice. Quotations show little or no variation, but as the large amount of goods now landing ex the three English ships are brought into market, we may look for lower rates in several leading lines. In New Zealand produce, salt butter, owing to the high price of fresh, is in improved demand for local consumption, prime cured in kegs being worth Is. 3d. per lb.; kegs, 6s. There is no enquiry for shipment. Bacon and hams are now fully stocked, at 9d. to Is. per lb. Cheese firm, at lOd. to IO.Jd. Flour has advanced 10s. per ton during the week, owing to telegrams from Oamaru that the mills had increased their quotation to that extent; but it is hardly probable that the rise will be sustained in the face of the large stocks in Canterbury and Otago. In grain, oats are unaltered in value, being still quoted at 2s. 6d. to 2s. Bd. per bushel—stocks ample. Maize is scarce, and worth ss. 3d. to ss. 6d. Good malting barley, 4s. 4d. to 4s. 6d.
