The magnificent steamer Arawata, sister ship to the Ringarooma, arrived in Melbourne on the 13th inst., 51 days out, including 5 days’ detention at the Cape. This, we believe to be one of the fastest trips on record. The new schooner Kaikonra, 31 tons, built and launched in Auckland for Captain Davidson, of the Kaikonra, left Auckland on Saturday direct for the owner’s place. Captain Dalton, at present master of the regular trader Ruby, will take command on her arrival here ; and Captain J. Anderson, who is bringing the Kaikonra down, will take Captain Dalton's place.

The s.s. Easby, Captain A. Kennedy, arrived in harbor at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Horn Newcastle via Sydney. The Easby left Wellington on the 2nd inst and experienced strong N.W. winds from Cook Strait to Newcastle, arriving there on the 10th. Took on hoard 140o_tons of coal, and left for Sydney on the 14th, arriving the same day ; filled up with remainder of coal, and a large quantity of cargo. Left Sydney at 10.25 p.m. of the 17tli ; experienced unsettled anil boisterous weather on the passage. Made Cape Farewell at G p.m. on Tuesday, and had a very heavy NEW. gale the same night, the weather being so thick that she hove-to for two hours off the entrance of Blind Bay. The barometer showing 29’40. We have to thank Captain Kennedy for report and late files.

On September 17 Messrs. Palmer launched from their shipbuilding yard at Jarrow, an iron sailing ship, named the Hurunin, of the following dimensions Length, 195 ft.; breadth, 34ft. ; depth, 20ft. This is tlio third vessel built at Jarrow for the New Zealand Shipping Company, and she is intended to carry emigrants to Canterbury, New Zealand. Palmer’s Company at Jarrow have still two more vessels to launch for the same company. As narrow an escape from collision as we have seen in this harbor occurred oil Saturday (says the Sydney Echo of the 25th October.) The mail steamer Mikado was near Bradley’s Head, outward bound, when a small schooner called the Agnes, also outward bound, was seen coming towards her on the port tack. Pilot Creer ported the steamer’s helm and brought her nearly round, but the schooner still held her tack, keeping on the steamer’s port bow despite every effort made by the steamer to induce her skipper to go about, till lie finally crossed the Mikado’s bow by a few yards. If the latter had not been going slowly there would have been another tale to tell as vessels of her length cannot be slewed about like dingics, especially in narrow waters.
