A BRIDGE OVER THE WAIOHINE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —I am glad that the Provincial Engineer has enlightened us as to the delay in the erection of the Greytown viaduct, which was tendered for some considerable time back, viz., that a great change had taken place in the river-bed, “and that it could not bo completed until after the Hoods of this year were over.” Now, when wo bear in mind that very large sums have been constantly expended in pegging down fascines, boulders, Ac., Ac., along the side of tiro road, it is not to be wondered that the river should keep shifting its course, rather than cutting out a channel; and if Mr. llaird really has no further excuse than that given, I must way that it is an amusingly lame one.

It. is very funny for us to ho informed that at some period of the year we may expect the floods to be " over.” Allow me to inform this gentleman that the greatest flood ever known was in January, and after all the snow had left the hills. We have had very large ones in February and November. The Kowhai floods and the Kata floods, may come very early or very late; in fact, wo are not safe at any time of the year, and if the provincial authorities had cared a fig for this important district they would have got the Waioliine bridged over in some way before the wool season had commenced, especially as seven hundred a year is collected at the Waioliine toll-gate.—l am, Ac., Anti-Pro vinci aliwt. Greytown. November 20,
