Artificial stone is being made at Taranaki.
It is worthy of notice that-while London, with its three and a half millions of souls, spend but £68,000 a-year upon its Fire Brigade, Boston, with its 200,000 inhabitants, spends £120,000 a-year, or nearly twice as much as London ; while Paris annually votes no less a sum than £IBO,OOO. A beautiful phenomenon was observed in Sydney—Venus appearing as a day star in the mid heavens, and remaining distinctly visible near the moon until after the hour of noon, and in the full blaze of the sun’s rays. The planet appeared a clearly defined spot, shining brightly in the blue sky, about ten degrees to the eastward of the moon ; its lustrous light being strongly contradistinguished from the dim, white, waning crescent of Luna.
