WAIRARAPA.

(from our own correspondent.) When the proposal to borrow £210,000 came before the Provincial Council several members took exception to the items for erecting bridges over Abbott’s Creek, near Featherston, and the deviation at the “Georges.” Two lives have been nearly lost in that creek during the past week, while traffic has been delayed for a whole week. The coach on its last trip downwards had to pass up the bed of the creek for a quarter of a mile. Three or four fallen trees had to be removed to allow the coach to pass. At the 44 Georges” again, I am credibly informed, the river has encroached upon the road, entailing, no doubt, the purchase of a few acres at a fabulous price. Rain has come down in torrents during the past three days, swelling the rivers and causing the death of two or three unfortunates in the Forty-Mile Bush, particulars of which your Masterton correspondent will, no doubt, send you. Steps will be taken to bring Greytown under the Local Boards Act. There have been several narrow escapes from drowing during the past week, owing to the flooded state of the Wairarapa rivers. A bridge on the road near Kahumingi has been carried aivay, thus stopping the traffic. A few sections have been lately sold in the Gladstone township at a very good figure. Land is in great demand everywhere. The Rising Sun Hotel, Greytown, has changed hands. It is rumored, also, that 44 Battersea,” one of Mr Martin’s properties, has become the property of Mr Hast well.
