EDUCATION BOARD.

It appears from our'evening contemporary that the Board of Education met on Monday and Tuesday, and transacted the arrears of business which must have accumulated during the past week or two. The following is an abstract of the business got through at these sittings : —That rates be forthwith recovered from defaulters. That £3O claimed by Rev. Father Cummin g on behalf of St Philomena's school be paid. It was decided to .request an advance of £6OO from the Provincial Secretary to meet present liabilities. The following are the local committees : Upper Hutt—Messrs Morgan, Bayliss, Cudby; Wairoa Messrs Bridge, Wilson, and Fookes ; Parewanui —Messrs Watkins and Paulin; Lower Rangitikei—Messrs Burns, Anion, and M'Kenzie; Kaitokoke Messrs Morgan and Jepson ; Mar's Hill and Matarawa —Messrs M'William and Higgie; Denlain and Omoko—Messrs Old and Sergeant ; River Bank Messrs Kennedy and Henson; Mataongaonga —Messrs Strachan and Sweeney. The Chairman was authorised to take immediate steps to have the school property at Greytown conveyed to the Board. It was resolved that the salary to be paid to the Roman Catholic school at Wanganui should not exceed £l5O. A letter was read from Messrs Hart and Buckley, stating that Mr John Martin revoked his promise to convey to the Board the land at the Lower Hutt on which the schoolroom was built. The Secretary was instructed to write that the Board declined paying for the land, but that on Mr Martin refunding such sums as had been expended on the building, the Board would throw no opposition in his way. _ On Tuesday letters were received from the Revs Fathers Petit Jean, O'Reilly, and Cummins, and the Superior of the Convent, relative to the Roman Catholic schools. It was decided to take no further steps in the matter, as there are now seven schools established by the Board in the city of Wellington, of which five are open to female scholars. The Secretary produced plans and specifications of a proposed model school house for the country districts, which, after sundry suggestions, were adopted, and the Secretary instructed to have lithographic copies drawn, in accordance with the suggestions. It being stated that the Upper Hutt local committee —Messrs Morgan, Bayliss, and Cudby—were unanimous as the desirability of the master's wishes being respected with regard to the Sunday school being held in the school-house, of which his residence formed a part, the Secretary was instructed to write to that effect. The Board authorised the execution of the proposed additions to the Tawa Flat school-house, under the superintendence of Mr Toomath, the member for the district. The Board adjourned to Monday next at eleven.
