Robbery of the Post Office at Opunake.— lnformation reached Taranaki on Saturday week, that a native had broken into the Post Office and Telegraph station at Opunake, and stolen therefrom £2. It appears that the telegraphist does not reside or take his meals on the premises, but sleeps and boards with others near the Opunake Company’s store, at Te Namu, about a mile distant from the place. This arrangement necessitates his leaving the office for an hour during the day to get his dinner, and on one occasion a native, watching the opportunity, broke two panes of glass in a window of the office, which enabled him to get in and perpetrate the robbery. The native, however, was soon apprehended by Captain Wilson’s native police force, and lie was held in custody until Mr Parris, the Native Resident Magistrate of this district, who was sent for, had arrived to adjudicate upon the ease. Mr Parris left town for Opunake early on Sunday morning, and was accompanied by Major Strapp.
