Auckland Library and Museum. THE Members of the “ Auckland Book Society,” having taken into consideration the benefit which would accrue to this Settlement and the Colony in general, by the formation of a good Public Library and Museum, have determined at a Meetiug held on the Ist ultimo, to extend the plan of their original Society, with a view to the attainment of this desirable object. It is, therefore, proposed, that an Institution be formed under the name of the “Auckland Library and Museum,” for the regulation and government of which the following prospectusof Rules isj laid before the public. Gentlemen desirous of becoming Proprietors and Subscribers, are hereby reqested to forward thdir names to James Stuart Freeman, Esq., the Secretary, on or before the Ist November next. I. That the Institution be open to Gentlemen admitted as Proprietors, (under Rule 4,) or as Subscribers, (under Rules 8 and 9,) or as Honorary Members, (under Rule 10.) 11. That Proprietors pay on admission the sum of £o sterling, and an Annual Subscription of £2 sterling ; and Subscribers an Annual Subscription onlv of £3 sterling. 111. That all Subscriptions be payable in advance on the Ist January ; but that persons admitted subsequently to the Ist July, be required only to pay half the Subscription for that year. IV. That any Gentleman desirous of becoming a Proprietor, be introduced by a Proprietor, balloted for at a General Meeting after at least three weeks’ notice, and admitted, if approved by three-fourths of the Proprietors then present; and that, on being so admitted, and paying the amount prescribed in Rule 2, he acquire a Life Interest in the Institution, and become entitled to the use of the books and other Appurtenances of the Library ; and to all other Privileges of a Proprietor, with the exception of voting for the first three months. V. That a Book, exhibiting the Names of the Proprietors or Shareholders, and the number by which their Shares are respectively distinguished, be kept by the Secretary, and signed by each Proprietor, on admission ; and that an Extract of the same, signed by the Secretary, be delivered to each Proprietor, if required. VI. That Proprietors be privileged to transfer their Interest in the Institution, to Gentlemen previously approved under Rule 4, but to no other. VII. That Officers of her Majesty’s Army and Navy, and Ministers of Religion who are not permanently resident in the Colony, if introduced by a Proprietor, be admitted as Annual Subscribers, without Ballot , on payment of the Subscription only, and be entitled to all the Privileges of the Institution, enjoyed by Subscribers under Rule 8. VIII. That any Gentleman desirous of beeoming a Subscriber on payment of the Annual Subscription, be introduced by two Proprietors, balloted for in the usual manner at a General Meeting, after, at least, three week’s notice, and if elected by three-fourths of the Proprietors present, be entitled to all the privileges of the Institution, except those of holding office, originating measures and voting, but acquire no property or interest therein. IX. That any stranger, a temporary resident for a period not exceeding three months, if introduced by two Proprietors, be allowed, without ballot, admissiou into the Library as an honorary member, but not to take Books out of it. X. That Proprietors introducing Annual Subscribers, or Honorary Members, be, in all cases, responsible to the Institntion in the due observance of the Rules by the Gentlemen so introduced. XI. That the business of the Institution be conducted by a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and a Committee of Ten Proprietors, elected annually, at a General Meeting in the month of January ; and that vacancies occuring during the year be filled up at a Special General Meeting caled for the purpose That the Members of the Society as it now exists (named below; be considered a Committee, with power to add to their number, for the present year, at the termination of which a General Meeting be called, for the election of a new Committee, as provided by Rule XI. POWELL, BEGS leave to return Ins sincere thanks to the Roman Catholic Committee for the kind patronage they have hitherto bestowed on him, and respectfully intimates to the Inhabitants of Auckland in general, that he opeued a Seminary for the instruction of youth, on Monday, the 27th Instant; his course of Education comprises a sound knowledge of the English Language, with Writing and Arithmetic in all its Branches. The most strict attention will be paid to the morals of those-intrusted to his care. Terms, which will be found moderate, may be known by applying to Mr. P. Shortland Crescent, near Mr. Stone’s. Mr. P. will feel happy in devoting his Evening’s t_p_ Private Instruction.
