DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE.

We understand that it is the intention of His Excellency to visit Port Nicholson, and some parts of New Munster. On Thursday next, he leaves Auckland, accompanied by E. Shortland, Esq., private Secretary; Lieutenant Smart, Aid-de-camp ; the Surveyor-General and Mrs, Mathew ; G. F. Dawson Esq Police Magistrate for Cook's Straits ; E, Halswell, M. C, and Chairman of the Quarter Sessions at Port Nicholson, &c. &c. Accident in the River.—We regret to record the almost certain loss of Cornelius Ryan, a line young man, (lately the Governor's coxwain), but better known by the name of Harris. On the 3rd instant, he went towards the mouth of the river in a boat, to look (as is believed), for another boat, then missing. The night was stormy ; and, as he did not return on the next day, considerable apprehensions were entertained for his safety. The cutter of the Harbour-Master was despatched, but returned without success, as regarded Ryan, or his boat. They, however, discovered another boat, swamped, with the sails set, reefed. She has since been got up by the Harbour-Master and his crew, with considerable exertion, and now lies at the Dock Yard Reserve, in Official Bay. This boat is supposed to have belonged to a man, named Tnrtley, who had gone on a trading trip, and it is feared, has perished, as well as poor Ryan. Mechanics' Institute.—A Meeting of individuals favourable to the establishment of a Mechanics' Institute in Auckland, was held at the School-house, on Wednnesday evening. A code of rules was unanimously adopted, and the object of the Society was defined to be, " the acquirement and diffusion of useful knowledge, by means of a library, museum, reading room, and discussions and iectures ; to be strictly confined to subjects connected with mechanical science and natural productions." We are convinced, from the which pervaded the discussion, that the avowed objects of the promoters of the Institution will not be deviated from, and, with these impressions, the Institution shall have our best wishes. Catholic Chapel at Kororarika.—A subscription has been again opened at the Bay of Islands, under the auspices of Bishop Pompalier, for erecting a Catholic Chapel at Kororarika. The amount contributed, according to the subscription list last published, was £154 12s. 6d. Subscription lists have been opened in Sydney ; and we would suggest that a similar plan might be followed, in regard to the projected Metropolitan Church for Auckland. Many wealthy proprietors of lands in this Colony resident iu Sydney, would, we should hope, deem it an imperative duty to contribute to this object. BjNded Store. —We understand that the Collector of Customs has granted a License to Mr. Alexander Trimmer for a Bonded Store, which will be erected in a tew days, and very greatly facilitate the commercial operations of Auckland and its vicinity. Rate of Wages.—-Labourers, in Auckland, can earn from seven to ten shillings per day; and Mechanics from twelve to fifteen shillings. Removal of Prisoners to tiik New Goal.— The four prisoners now in custody, were, on Tuesday, removed from the Old Lock-up to the New Goal, fronting Lower Queen-street, and placed in charge of Mr M'llvain. None of the charges are of a serious character ; a fact which speaks volumes as to the character of our population, guarded, as it is, by an efficient body of police for the detection of delinquents.—The New Goal is not yet finished ; but a sufficient portion of it is completed for the safe custody of the prisoners, and as a residence for the Goaler, whose appointment, we learn, has given general satisfaction.
