LIEUT-GENERAL FREYBERG APPLAUSE IN PARLIAMENT (S.R.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The appointment of Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., commander of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, as the next Governor-General of New Zealand was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, in the House of Representatives this afternoon. The announcement was greeted with warm applause from all parts of the House. The term of the present Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, will expire next bebruary, so General Freyberg may be expected to take office early next year. After paying a tribute to Sir Cyril Newall, the Prime Minister said it was fitting that he should be succeeded by the brilliant leader of the Second New Zealand Division. Mr Fraser referred to General Freyberg's record in two wars, his gallantry and qualities of leadership. Lady Freyberg had done great work for the welfare of New Zealand service men and women overseas. Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg would be assured of a very warm welcome from the people of New Zealand. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, supported Mr Fraser's statement on General Freyberg's great qualities and complimented the Government on the choice. There would be a wholehearted welcome for him and Lady Freyberg.
