LEAGUE CODE

OTAHUHTJ BEATEN

RICHMOND'S NARROW WIN Two Tine (tames were witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when the Auckland Rugby League decided the semi-final of the major competition. In spite of counter-attractions, 'there was a large attendance. The splendid plav by tlio Ponsonby backs was the deciding factor 'in the defeat of Otahuhu in .the main same. A feature was the hiffh scoring of E*. Nordgren, Ponsonby, vvJtio gained K> of the 28 points. Otahuhu. which won t he minor championship, was thus eliminated from t tie competition. After an even congest Richmond narrowly heat Mount Albert, which made a great recovery in the final stages. Ponsonb.V will now play Richmond in the final of the major championship. The results were as follows: — Ponsonhy, 28; Otahuhu, 18. Richmond, 10; Mount Albert, 7. Otahuhu started well against Ponsonby and for ten minutes bottled the winning team, i However, Ponsonby settled down to repel | several attacks and then dominate the game, i Brady and Halsey were associated in a nice ! movement and the latter scored. Past, open ' play followed arid Allen and Kay made good 1 ground. From a good team movement Kelly ! made a fine opening and Nordgrciu raced over. Hull titood out in some forward play ! and rail <J() yards before Kelly took the | final pass. The latter sold the dummy to : Brady and Smith and touched down for a good try. The Ponsonby forwards gained ; possession from most scrums and D. Hardi wick did effective work in the loose. Otahuhu I played well in patches, bill there was a lack of finish to the movements by the inside backs. Fogarty headed a dangerous forward ! offensive, but cut infield when Seymour could I iiavo scored Otahuhu deserved a try when ! Simons scored after Martin and I. Johnson | had given timely support. Otahuhu was uni lucky just 'before half-time when Simons crashed over but hit the corner-flag with his arms. The half-time score was: Ponsonb.V, 1—; Otahuhu. 8. Amusing Incident An amusing incident occurred early in the second half, when Kelly broke clean away and passed to Nordgren, who lost his shorts in a tackle and stopped, to miss scoring. Soon afterward Kay cut through and T. Hardwick crossed. The latter added another try after Nurse had raced well into Otahuhu s twentyfive. Ponsonby bad a lead of 12 points at this stage, but it was reduced when Halsey scored a well-deserved try. A well-directed centre kick by Tit t let on gave Nordgren a chance to show his speed, and be raced on to score. There was not a dull moment in the game and the Otahuhu forwards battled well against stout opposition. The Ponsonby backs, however, were always dangerous and superior speed gave Kelly a clever try. In the last few minutes Seymour broke away and from a passing movement by the Otahuhu forwards M. Johnson scored. The speed, good handling and excellent positional play of the Ponsonby backs proved a hard ol*lacle for Otahuhu. The latter was unlucky at times in attacking movements. Brady, at centre, was always dangerous, but looked too often for an interception, lonsonby is the most improved team in the competition. Outstanding Back The outstanding back on the ground was Kelly, the Ponsonby centre, who time and again cut the defence to ribbons with clever footwork and elusive running. His two tries were brilliant efforts. Nordgren, on the wing, also played a fine game. Kay and Allen, the five-eighths, were prominent on attack, especially tiie former. Behind the scrum, G. Tittle ton did his work well. Nurse on the wing, suffered from lack of opportunities. At fullback, G. Hughes was sound, although his kicking could be improved, lhe lonsonby forwards played splendidly as a set. Hull, on Ibis form, is the best front-row forward in Auckland, while Moffitt and Hadlc.v also pi a veil well. Hardwick was again impressive and scored two tries. Mitchell was prominent in the loose. „. , . , The curtain-raiser, between Richmond and Mount Albert, attracted interest arid on the play Richmond was a little lucky to emerge the winner. Throughout the second half Mount Albert pressed hard and had a decided territorial advantage. The Richmond backs had a little better finish to their passing, but the Mount Albert forwards outplayed the opposition. Among the Richmond backs. Furnell. at centre, played a fine same, and \\ lies. ror Monnt Albert, was the best back on the ground. The scores were:— „ T1 , Ponsonby, '2B (tries by Kelly, '2, 1. Hardwick. 2, Nordgren. 2. Nordgren converting three tries and kicking two penalty goals); Otahuhu, IS (tries by Halsey, 2, Simons and M. Johnson. Riley converting three tries). Richmond, 10 (tries by Renme C. Williams, both converted by Pnrnell); Mount Albert. 7 (try by Clement, C'ranch converting and also kicking a penalty goal). SCHOOLBOYS' TOURNAMENT (0.C.) Whenuapai was lucky to beat Metro College by the odd goal in five, as some of Metro's shots hit posls and bar. Thistle staged a recovery in the last few minutes of a great game to score twice, and cause a surprise by beating Eastern Suburbs by the odd goal in three. In the Flyger Rose Bowl match between' Auckland and South Auckland representatives under 21 years of age at the Domain, Auckland was successful in regaining the trophy, by two goals to one, after a very even game. The juniors "All Rep." day at the Domain was a success, and some good football was witnessed. In the main attraction at Blandford Park, Eastern Suburbs showed out early with good plav to lead by the only goal scored at halftim'c. The wingers, Walsh ain and Colling*, were prominent in clever runs, but although the backs, Gilbert and MoKellar, sent the hall down, not enough use was made of the high wind, arid Peebles and Orr for Thistle, smothered many dangerous movements. In the second spell Thistle made use of the wind and Anstiss and Dean were prominent and dangerous, while Kerr in the centre distributed the play to advantage.
