LEAGUE CODE

MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP OTAHUHU TEAM SUCCESSFUL The minor championship of the Auckland Rugby League was won on Saturday afternoon by Otalnihu. Prior to Saturday, Richmond was the leading team, and its success appeared certain. However, the Mount Albert forwards were' mainly responsible for the defeat of Richmond in the main game on Saturday by a . narrow margin. The result was a surprise, even allowing for the bad ground conditions, as Richmond Jias played consistently good football throughout the round. ~in the curtain-raiser, which was a disappointing exhibition, Otalnihu defeated Marist. Roth teams kicked too much. No. '2 ground was in a bad state. There Ponsonby again showed good form to win comfortably from Newton, while North Shore did well to beat Manukau. City beat Point Chevalier at Glen Eden by 23 points to 17. There was only a fair attendance at Carlaw Park. Results were as follows: Mount Albert, 12; Richmond, 7. Otahuhu, 10; Marist, 0. North Shore, £?: Manukau, 0. Ponsonby, 22; Newton, 2. City, 23; Point Chevalier, 17. Superior Tactics Supar.or tactics by the Mount Albert forwards carried the, day against Richmond. Right from the kick-off excellent ball control and close, rugged tactics resulted in Mount Albert dominating the play. Thomassen was outstanding in clean hooking, while Milliken was prominent in the loose. The ground was liiore slippery than muddy and handling was very difficult. The Richmond backs were obviously not suited to the conditions and they made matters worse by kicking too deeply. The Mount Albert forwards swarmed round the Richmond goal and Shadbolt took Ino ball off a Richmond player and completed,, a nice piece of work with a ■try. Cranch converted and. as he had previously kicked a penalty goal, Mount Albert led by 7 points to nil. Richmond played better football in the second spell and its forwards hunted more as a pack. The advantage was mostly with the Mount Albert forwards, however, and Thomasscn's consistent hooking kept the ball away from the Richmond backs. The play was fast and open, and a new referee for a main game, Mr A. Payne, controlled it well. Wild passing by the Richmond backs gave Mount Albert n try, scored by Corbett with speed and determination, Richmond did well the next fifteen minutes, when L. Davies . and Potter were associated in a smart attack and Lowther, on the wing, outpaced the opposition to score a good try. Two successful kicks at goal reduced the margin to five points. Mount Albert deserved its success, showing form more in keeping with the ability of its big forwards. Fullback Plays Well A feature of the game was the excellent display of Magill, fullback for Richmond. His fielding was faultless and his powerful kicking got Richmond out of many tight corners. Beeston, at centre, and Corbett, on the wing, made impressive debuts as seniors. The former replaced Wiles, who is on the injured list, and he was in most attacking movements. Both the five-eighths. J. Zane and Neary, did good work on defence and attack, while Clement was a tower of strength at halfback. Among the forwards Milliken and Shadbolt excelled in every , way. The former is rapidly getting back to his best. Caples. Fielder and Conya all shared in the honours. 6 The duel for the goal-kicking honours in the minor championship, between C. Riley and J. Anderson, attracted some attention in the curtain-raiser between Otahuhu and Marist. Both were equal before the game with 4!? goals. Riley (Otahuhu) converted the two tries scored, while Anderson failed to gain any points. Riley thus won a fine trophy donated by Mr L. Painter. The scorers were:—Mount Albert, 12 (tries by Shadbolt arid Corbett, Cranch converting both and kicking a penalty goal), Richmond, 7 (try by Lowlher, Furnell converting and kicking a penalty goal); Otahuhu, 10 (tries by M. Johnson and J. Speedy, Riley converting both), Marist, 0; North Shore. 8 (tries by Cameron and Green, Taylor converting one), Manukau, 0; Ponsonby, 22 (tries by Kelly, 2, Hadley, Nurse, Nordgren and Moffitt, Nordgren converting two). Newton, 2 (penalty goal by WooIIey). Player Suspended The Auckland Rugby League control board met at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon to further consider an incident in the match the previous week, between Richmond and Manukau, when J. Satherley, one of the Richmond forwards, was injured. The committee decided that J. Zimmerman, of the Manukau team, should be suspended for the rest of the season. The case is without precedent In the history of the code, as Zimmerman was not ordered off the ground by the referee. Mr J. Hawkes, for alleged rough play. The judicial committee of the Auckland Rugby League instituted the proceedings. The referee, it is reported, did not actually wilness the incident UNIVERSITY SPORTS TOURNAMENT AT DUNEDIN OTAGO LEADS FOR SHIELD (P-A-) DUNEDIN, Sunday The New Zealand University winter sportfi tournament, in which over 300 competitors from all parts of the Dominion are engaged, were continued in fine weather on Saturday.
