LEAGUE CODE

RICHMOND'S SUCCESS

LEADER IN CHAMPIONSHIP A splendid exhibition of football was witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon when Richmond defeated Manukau to retain its lead in the Auckland Rugby League's senior championship. The Richmond backs gave a high-class display of the correct type of League football and generous applause was Riven to the tries scored. The series attracted a large crowd, among the patrons being representatives of numerous sporting bodies who attended at (lie invitation of the chairman, Mr J. W. Watson.

The curtain-raiser, between Ponsonby and Mount Albert, was also a fine game. It was won by Ponsonby, which is now showing excellent, form. Newton created a surprise by gaining a good victory over City, last year's champion team. Otahuhu proved too good for North Shore, while Marist secured a convincing win against Point Chevalier.

The results were as follows: Richmond, 11; Manukau, 7. Ponsonby, 19; Mount Albert, 10. Newton, 12; City, 8. Otahuhu, 13; North Shore ,7. Marist, 21; Point Chevalier, 8. Manukau's chances against Richmond were considered favourably by followers of (he code and its previous good form supported this view. However, Hichmoud was at the top of iti form and the result was never in doubt. It was surprising that Richmond won, seeing that its backs, particularly Williams and Robertson, kicked the ball almost incessantly in the first spell and scoring chances were lost.

The game was marred by hard play, and Satherley (Richmond) received an injury iri the second spell as the result of what appeared to be a wilful head butt by a Manukau forward. Richmond played one short for :iO minutes of the second spell. Robertson being taken off injured. Richmond took the lead early. In a passing bout Robertson made a fine opening and the ball was handled by Furnell and Kinney, the latter sending it back to Furnell, who scored a good try. The Manukau backs saw little of the ball and they were mostly on the defensive. The forwards put in some effective work in the loose and Magill tackled Kirinui when n try looked likely. Superior speed and better passing gave Richmond its second try, Rennie started a passing bout and Furnell made a good opening for Kinney to race over. Richmond led at half-time by (! points to 2. Soon after the kick-off Richmond went further ahead, Satherley scoring a try from a passing bout, Shilton indulged in a little unnecessary hard play and the tactics of Pinches, the Richmond hooker. appeared illegal. Half-way through the second spell rain set in and the Manukau forwards played better. Rogers gave Manukau a chance and Shilton burst through before passing to Murray, who scored a fine try. Manukau did most of the attacking in the last ten minutes and just failed to pull the game out of the fire. The honours, however, were with Richmond, which revealed excellent teamwork. Possession of the hall from the scrum was a deciding factor.

lurnell, centre-tbreequarter for Richmond, played an outstanding game, making many clever openings, from two of which tries resulted. Magill was sound at fullback and started a number of effective passing bouts. Prenter again played with dash oh the wing. the scrum, Rennie gave good service. Williams played a sound game at fiveeighths, particularly in the second spell, when he passed instead of kicking. Among the forwards Thompson was outstanding, while Potter, Satherley and Metcalfe did good work in the loose.

The scorers were:—Richmond, 11 (tries by Furnell, Kinney and Satherley, Furnell converting one), Maiinkan, 7 (try by Murray, converted by Butler, who also kicked a penalty goal); Ponsonby, 19 (tries by T. Hardwick, Kelly, Nordcrcn, Moffitt and Nurse, Nordgren converting two), Mount Albert, 10 (tries by J. Zane and Clement, Crunch converting one kicking a penalty goal); Newton, 12 (tries by Keen and Bclsham, Woollpv converting both and kicking- a penultv goal), City. H (tries by Silva and R. Cunningham, A. Donovan converting one); Otahuhu. 18 (tries by Brady, 2, M. Johnson and Simons, Rilev converting two and kicking a penalty goal). North Shore. 7 (try by Read and two 'tenuity goals by Clarke); Marist. 21 (tries by Anderson, Davidson and MrLeod, Anderson converting two and kicking four penalty goals) Point Chevalier, 8 dries by McKinnon and Shirley and penalty goal by Walker)

HOCKEY SHIELD LOST CANTERBURY TAKES TROPHY In one of the best exhibitions of hockey seen in Auckland for a number of years, Canterbury defeated Auckland at Papatoetoe on Saturday afternoon in a game for the iNew Zealand Challenge Shield, competition for which has been suspended during the war years. The play was very fast throughout, with both sides playing good, constructive hockey.' In the first spell Canterbury showed splendid combination which must have given great satisfaction to its coach. The Auckland team did not have the same cohesion and the forwards did not seem to be able to find touch, with the result that at halftime Canterbury was leading 3—o. The second spell saw Auckland on the attack and open its score. The pace was very fast now, with Auckland forcing the issue and adding another goal. Play was mostly in inidficld, as both sets of packs were defending stubbornly, until Canterbury broke through to lead 4 —2. With only a few minutes to go Auckland made the score I—31 —3 and for the remainder of the spell was right on top, but the Canterbury defence keld long enough to give it the shield. A feature of the match was tho brilliant goal-keeping of both goalies, who made spectacular saves on a number of occasions. Duffield (2), Moir and Thomas scored for Canterbury, and Wyatt (2) and Ronghton netted for .Auckland. Messrs R. Hamilton and H. E. Watts were the umpires.
